78er is one of the house blends from Tabak Trennt, a shop founded in Kiel in 1870, taking its name from the year it was prepared, 1978. Like other Trennt blends bearing Karl-Heinrich Trennt's signature, it is an unflavored mixture made purely of natural tobacco leaf; according to the shop's records, production continues unchanged at the Walter Wehde tobacco factory in Hamburg, to the original recipe.

Being a house blend, it has no wide distribution and is obtained largely through the Kiel shop. It suits smokers who enjoy unflavored English-style mixtures and look for tobacco's own natural taste — a product of a business tradition opposed to artificial flavoring.
