Standard Mixture

Standard Mixture is Swiss tobacconist Wellauer's classic blend tied to the English school. It consists of Latakia, Oriental leaves, and processed Virginia; according to retailer records, these leaves are also roasted. It contains no flavoring casing, so the taste comes entirely from the leaves themselves.

On opening the tin, a pronounced Latakia scent and a spicy depth come forward. In the smoke, Latakia builds a woody, smoky, lightly leathery base; the Oriental leaf adds a dry, grassy, occasionally sharp spice; Virginia holds a measured natural sugar and a warm toast tone underneath. As the smoke progresses, the spicy opening gives way to a fuller, rounder character. The loose-mixture cut makes packing easy, and the burn stays even. It can be considered an evening pipe for smokers seeking a traditional, unflavored Latakia mixture.
