47th Street originated as the blend of the shop called Tobacco Center, and was taken over by Wilke Pipe Tobacco in the mid-1900s and added to the brand's catalog. Named after one of New York's streets associated with tobacconist shops, this record is part of Wilke's tradition of keeping old city blends alive.
The blend is Virginia-based; a notable amount of Latakia and Perique is worked over it. Virginia gives tart fruit and bready sweetness, while Latakia adds a layer of soot and burnt wood, and Perique contributes spice reminiscent of dried plum and black pepper. There's no casing, so the flavor is entirely leaf-derived. Since the body stays above medium, it suits smokers familiar with English mixtures who want a spicy edge.
