Kulpinski is the name Polish pipe master Ryszard Kulpiński carries on the pipes he produces in the city of Przemyśl. This small city in the country's southeast has been considered the center of Polish pipemaking since the last quarter of the nineteenth century; Kulpiński is one of the masters connected to that tradition's postwar generation.

The Przemyśl Tradition and Apprenticeship

Pipemaking in the city began in the 1870s. Czech-born craftsman Wincenty Swoboda began carving pipes in a basement in 1889 and set up his own workshop in 1908. Production, which stopped with Swoboda's death in 1941, was revived in 1945 when the Walat brothers opened a workshop. Ryszard Kulpiński joined this workshop in 1956 and learned the craft there.

These years at the bench were also a schooling in coping with shortage of materials. Because briar imports were irregular under the socialist period, Polish pipes were long carved from domestic woods such as pear and walnut. According to the pipe literature, conditions eased somewhat after 1970; Kulpiński is credited with a share in the success of the Walat workshop's products, which came to be widely known by the name "Walatówka" during the 1971-1981 period.

Independence and His Own Signature

According to the same sources, the death of Ludwik Walat marked a fork in the road for those who had trained at the workshop. Kulpiński worked for a time together with Ryszard Filar, who came from the same school; the two masters' partnership dissolved in 1983, after which Kulpiński produced alone. His own workshop is said to have begun operating in the early months of 1984. It is also stated in these same records that in 1985 he was honored with a title, translatable as "master of artistic crafts," awarded by the then Ministry of Culture and Art; the official Polish name of the title has not been confirmed. In the Poland of the time, such an honor meant that pipemaking had moved, within the state's classification, out of being an ordinary handcraft and into the artistic crafts.

The real turning point came after 1989. With the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc, the briar shortage disappeared, and for the first time Polish-made pipes could be judged by the same standards as Western European work. Kulpiński made the most of this opening at trade shows; he exhibited both at home and abroad, and is counted among the first Polish makers whose name became known in pipe circles outside Eastern Europe. Block sourcing is also said to have settled during this period, with material sourced mainly from Portugal, Spain, and Albania after 1997.

Autograf Pipes

The workshop worked at two different tempos from the start. Classic shapes were multiplied with machine assistance; alongside these, pieces finished by hand one by one were produced. This dual arrangement is an example where the distinction between artisan pipe and factory pipe can be traced within a single workshop. The hand-worked pipes are set apart by the name Autograf and four-digit numbers; some are figural, sculptural carvings, and some are freehand pieces, free-form shapes following the block's grain.

The Autograf list also includes reinterpretations of historic pieces. According to accounts, pipe number 0099 was made using the dimensions of a meerschaum pipe held in the Przemyśl museum, said to have been carved around 1800 for a Polish nobleman. The city's pipe collection is today displayed at the Bell and Pipe Museum, part of the Przemyśl National Museum, in the building of the clock tower. No up-to-date record has been found regarding the maker's and workshop's current status.
