Ludwig Lorenz is the current name of a pipemaking tradition that has run for three generations in Austria's Tyrol region. The family's start in pipe production dates to 1886, and its present workshop is in the village of Götzens, a few kilometers from Innsbruck. The brand is not a mass-production factory but a one-person handmade workshop turning out a few hundred pieces a year; in Austrian trade records it appears under the name "Pfeifendesign Lorenz," with the occupation listed as pipemaker (Pfeifenschneider).

Three Generations of Family Tradition

Records indicate the family's first generation began making pipes in 1886. Credit for the business taking its present form, though, belongs mainly to second-generation Karl Lorenz: after the Second World War he opened a pipe shop in Innsbruck and ran both the production and sales side over a career spanning nearly sixty years. Born in 1963, Ludwig Lorenz entered the trade not straight from the pipe lathe but through an apprenticeship in wood sculpture, earning his master craftsman's certificate in that field; he learned the finer points of pipemaking at his father's side. He founded his own business in 1985 and ran the Innsbruck shop he inherited from his father until 2004. Since then he has carried on his work at his workshop in Götzens.

The Double-Filter Pipe

The feature that made the Lorenz name known beyond Austria's borders is the double-filter mechanism Karl Lorenz developed in the 1950s. The system has two separate filtering points: a filter plate set into the base of a removable chamber, and a second filter inside the shank. The aim is to trap moisture and condensation from the smoke in two stages, producing a drier, gentler draw. The maker says no other example of this system exists on the market; it is the feature that keeps the brand known outside Austria as well. Standard production is bored for a 9 mm filter; unfiltered bodies are made only on special order. The working principles of filter types and their effect on the smoke are discussed in detail in the entry on pipe filters and systems.

Production and Materials

The workshop turns out between one and two hundred pipes a year, and each piece is one of a kind; every stage, from rough cutting to final polish, passes through the same hand. The briar used comes from the Mediterranean basin, records say specifically from the Calabria region of southern Italy. Stems are hand-shaped from acrylic; gold, silver, and horn, among other materials, are used for bands and decorative elements. The maker says he completes a pipe in about thirty separate steps; in one report from Tyrol, he says the process from rough cutting to polish takes two to three hours per piece. Further detail on this working method can be found in the entry how a pipe is made.

The influence of his sculpture training also shows in the production range. Alongside classic shapes, unusual, figurative, and free designs are also known from the workshop; the maker says that even in these experiments, keeping the pipe smokable remains his basic criterion. In this sense, Lorenz stands at a point where the industrialized German-Austrian filtered-pipe tradition meets the freehand approach.
