Brands

• Boris Starkov — Records contain only the brand name and a collection of images of his pipes. No information about the maker's working period, workshop, or production method has been documented.

• Fyodorov — Records mention only the name; there is no information about the brand's maker, location, or period.

• Grigoriev — Andrey Grigoriev (b. 1982), working in Saint Petersburg, took up pipemaking as a hobby alongside an engineering career in 2004. The decisive turning point came two years later, when he met Viktor Yashtylov, known for his high-grade pipes; from 2010 he worked as an apprentice at the master's workshop and absorbed his methods and approach to form. His own signed pipes appeared after this apprenticeship.

• Java — Java is a pipe brand produced for the tobacco company of the same name, known in Russia as Yava; it is therefore a name tied to the tobacco industry rather than to a master's workshop. The company's origin traces to a tobacco factory founded in Moscow in 1856. Pipe production was interrupted for a period. The Pipedia entry states the company was referred to after 1894 as the Russian arm of British American Tobacco, but this date is inconsistent: BAT was founded in 1902 and acquired a controlling stake in the Yava factory in 1991.

• Kharlamov — Aleksey Harlamov (Kharlamov) is recognized as the winner of the first pipemaking competition held in Russia. Also a sculptor and wood-carver, Harlamov produces freehand forms alongside traditional shapes. His pipes, densely carved with motifs such as crocodiles, iguanas, pangolins and bamboo, are made only to order.

• Looshin — The brand carries the signature of Russian master Yevgeni Lushin (Евгений Лушин). Sources contain no detail about the master's working period, workshop, or production approach; only images of his pipes and the name remain.

• Mr. Pipes — Mr. Pipes is the brand of Russian master Mikhail (Misha) Revyagin. The master's name first became known in the pipe community through a work video that circulated online, and later through forums where pipemakers gather. Sources lack information on the master's training and workshop history; on the other hand, his pipes' craftsmanship is spoken of with praise.

• PS Studio — P. S. Studio pipes are designed under the signature of Vladimir Grechukhin; production is carried out by two masters working under his supervision. At the Saint Petersburg workshop, Grechukhin began pipemaking in the 1970s, at a time when briar was hard to obtain, by working with other wood species, and quickly became counted among the country's leading masters. Pipes are carved by hand and finished either smooth or sandblasted; stems are cut from rod stock and finished with fine decorative pieces such as horn, boxwood, or black palm. On some examples, horn-look acrylic bands and hand-cut vulcanite stems are seen.

• Sergey Cherepanov — Sergey Cherepanov began pipemaking at a relatively advanced age, learning the craft as Mikhail Revyagin and Viktor Yashtylov shared their experience with him. At his workshop outside the city he produces around a hundred pipes a year and shows a preference for freehand shapes. He uses Mimmo and Mino briar as material, more rarely Jaume Houm briar, and German and Japanese vulcanite for stems. In his own smoking he is known to favor small, hand-comfortable pipes and plain Virginia tobacco.

• Shaydullin — Fidel Shaydullin's benchmark is internal engineering: a pipe cleaner must be able to pass from the stem tip to the bottom of the bowl without the pipe being disassembled. He favors working with bog oak alongside Greek and Algerian briar; for stems he uses German and Japanese vulcanite and Cumberland. By his own account, pipemaking is for him not a livelihood but a pursuit taken seriously, and he has made around 250 pipes to date.
