Dating Castello Pipes and Reading the Stamps

Dating Castello pipes relies not on a single year code but on several successive generations of stamps. The workshop was founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti in Cantù; the wording, letters, and symbols used since then are usually enough to place a pipe within a decade, and after 1987 directly within its year. The following criteria require reading the stamps together: none gives a certain result on its own.

Early Wording

In the years right after founding, pipes were stamped "Mi Reserva," roughly "my own reserve"; records take this wording to mark production between 1947 and 1950. In the following period, "Reg No" was added to the stamp. This number is often mistaken for a shape number; in fact it is only the company's trademark registration number and has nothing to do with the pipe's shape.

The shape number itself does not give a date on its own, but it needs to be read. A digit placed before the number indicates the nature of the shape: a 2 means the bowl has been treated in an ornate variation; a 3 means the carving is out of the ordinary. Reportedly, numbers beginning with 3 were in time replaced by the symbol π; the year this change was made is not documented.

The mark on the mouthpiece is also distinguishing. The first symbol used was the white bar. Castello beginning to work with American distributor Wally Frank changed this: since the distributor's own product line already carried the name "White Bar," a diamond-look stone inlay was designed for the American market. On white acrylic mouthpieces, a black dot is used instead.

Size and Quality Letters

The first form of the letter system indicated only size. Reportedly, on pipes falling between the late 1950s and the mid-1960s, the letters SA, SB, SC, and SS were used, SA the smallest measure and SS the largest. Because this range rests on a single compilation, it should not be taken as a firm boundary.

Franco "Kino" Coppo joined the business in 1969; the grading based on the large letter "K" also became established around the late 1960s and early 1970s. On sandblast and carved surfaces this letter conveys only size; on smooth surfaces it conveys the nature of the grain together with the size. These same years are the years the workshop moved fully from hand-finished machine production to entirely handmade production.

In 1982 the large "K" was dropped for the lowercase "k": a single letter is given inside a circle, two or more inside an oval. This distinction is the most practical way to divide a pipe into pre- and post-1982.

The Castle Stamp and Additional Marks

In 1987, on the brand's fortieth year, a castle stamp containing a number began to be used. Adding the number to 1947 gives the manufacture year; a pipe with "50" in the castle is a 1997 piece. The stamp is not found on every pipe, so its absence alone is not taken as a dating indicator.

Short codes consisting of a letter or a letter-number pair are reported to indicate the tobacconist that first sold the pipe; most correspond to Italian shops, a few to sellers abroad. The codes give no date; they are useful only for understanding which market a pipe was prepared for. Management of the firm had passed, from the early 1980s, to Carlo Scotti's daughter Savina and her husband Franco Coppo; Scotti died in 1992. This continuity, which Coppo maintained until his death in 2025, also helped preserve the stamp system largely intact. The workshop's management today rests with Coppo's daughter Stefania Coppo.
