The letters "GL" are the initials of Gudbrand Larsen (d. 1902), who founded the brand in 1844. The alignment squares are red on some pipes and white on others. When sales declined in the 1960s the brand passed to Kriswill, and the Norwegian factory was run for a time by this Danish company; see also Norrøna.
