Blue Boar Rough Cut

Blue Boar is a classic American mass-market blend produced by the American Tobacco Company for much of the twentieth century. Its coarse-cut namesake version is based on combining differently processed Burley leaves with light Virginia; a very small amount of Latakia is added to give a smoky edge. This structure exemplifies the era's in-between type known as "American-style English": body comes from the Burley, with Latakia decorative rather than dominant.

The coarse-cut leaf, packed loosely into the bowl, allows generous airflow and gives a cool smoke. The taste is medium-intense; Burley's nutty, bready base is balanced by Virginia's measured sweetness. Per records the brand was discontinued long ago; today's products carrying the same name are imitation mixtures prepared to stand in for the original blend. It's considered a measured option for everyday smoking, suited to smokers cautious about smoky blends.
