Samuel Gawith is a longstanding tobacco house that has produced in the English town of Kendal since 1792. Best Brown Plug is the pressed plug-format member of the house's Best Brown family: it consists solely of Virginia leaf, with no sweetener or flavoring added, its sweetness coming from the leaf's own sugar. In this respect it is counted among the most unflavored Virginias produced in the United Kingdom.

On the smoke, a light peppery sharpness comes forward along with dried fig, brown sugar, and a nutty core taste in the background. Nicotine stays between light and medium; flavor intensity, however, is high. Since it comes in plug form, it is packed by slicing and rubbing, or by folding after drying somewhat; since moisture is high, a slow smoking pace is needed to avoid tongue bite.
