Reading a Sandblasted Surface
The texture on a sandblasted pipe stummel isn't random. How the annual rings, grain fibers, and birdseye areas map onto the surface explains why the texture doesn't come out the same everywhere.

Reading a sandblasted surface means seeing that the relief on a stummel isn't a pattern applied for decoration, but the exposed structure of the wood itself. Sandblasting doesn't add a new form to the surface; it makes tangible the difference between the wood's hard and soft zones. That's why two pipes put through the same process are never identical, and even the two sides of a single stummel can turn out different.
What the Rings Say
Every growing season leaves a ring in tree heath's root burl; as a rule, one ring corresponds to one year. The early wood formed at the start of the season is the product of fast growth — loose and soft; the late wood forming toward the season's end is denser and harder. Pressurized abrasive doesn't treat these two textures alike: the soft one wears away quickly, the hard one resists, leaving behind ridges stacked back to back. Ring width isn't constant either; a wet, long season leaves a wide ring, a dry year a narrow one. Briar burls are mostly harvested between thirty and sixty years of age, so a single stummel can show tight and loose ring clusters side by side.
The Surface Reveals the Block's Orientation
While rings stack layer by layer within the burl, grain lines are fibers running crosswise through those layers. What shows on the surface depends on how these two systems are oriented relative to the bowl. When the fibers are cut from the side, the layers are exposed one by one and distinct ridges read across the stummel. When the fiber ends face the surface instead, there are no rings left to read — the layers are being viewed not from the side but from above — and the mottled texture called birdseye appears. Because the grain fans out around the bowl, one side of a stummel can be ridged while the other is mottled. The rings running flat or at an angle along the length of the stummel comes from the same structure: when the bowl's axis meets the layers at a right angle, the rings read like a stack piled one on top of another; when the axis meets the layers at an angle, the bands instead lie lengthwise along the stummel.
The Limit of Depth
As reported from maker observation, how deep the abrasive can dig between layers is largely governed by how tight the grain fibers are: the tighter the fibers, the more they support each other, and the shallower the surface stays. This explains why blocks with the very tightest grain — the most prized for a smooth finish — often produce dull, low-relief blasts, while deep, rugged surfaces tend to come from comparatively looser-grained wood. It's also said that raising pressure has a ceiling of its own; past a certain point, instead of the relief deepening further, the whole surface drops together. The shallowness of the birdseye zone is attributed to the same framework. These are bench-derived criteria rather than topics treated directly in wood-anatomy literature.
Source of the Criterion
One known text laying out this way of reading from a maker's own eye is the article Talbert Pipes co-founder Trever Talbert published in his workshop journal on 10 May 2008. The text's conclusion is plain: the difference in texture between two sides more often comes from the wood's orientation than from the application. Such a reading doesn't declare one surface finish good or bad; it only helps name what's being looked at correctly.
