A. Petersen Pipes is a one-person pipe bench operating in the Quad Cities region of the American Midwest, where the Mississippi River flows from east to west. The name behind the brand is Andrew R. Petersen, who lives in Davenport, Iowa. The workshop is a typical example of the new generation of American makers producing individually signed pipes who emerged in the late 2000s.
Founding of the Bench
Petersen's start in pipe making dates, per records, to 2007. As the account goes, examining a factory-made Danish pipe he had bought and deciding the shape could come from his own hands too was the beginning of the work; he completed his first pipe that same autumn. Such a beginning is counted among the examples showing the influence of Danish School shapes on the American workshop generation.
Petersen first ran his business under the name Quad City Pipes. The name was a tribute to the two-state Quad Cities region, and pipes from this period carry the QCP stamp set inside an oval frame. Over time the maker came to prefer his products being known under his own name; the brand thus became A. Petersen Pipes. Examples carrying the old stamp are treated in collector records under a separate heading as the maker's early work.
Production and Approach to Shape
The bench is far from mass-production scale. According to what Petersen told the local press in 2012, finishing a single pipe at the time took more than ten hours of labor, with annual output running between forty and fifty. This pace points to a working method in which each bowl is handled individually, judged by eye rather than by mold; no current production figure is known for later years.
Known examples use Mediterranean-sourced briar as the material, and mostly vulcanite for the stem; exotic wood or horn accent rings placed between shank and stem are also a frequent detail of this work. Known pieces include both his own interpretations of classic shapes like apple and dublin, and free bowls guided by the wood's grain in the freehand approach. Sandblasting holds a notable place among the surface treatments; this approach, which brings out the grain in relief, was one of the main pursuits of American makers in the same years.
Its Place in the Community
Petersen's name began appearing in local publications and pipe enthusiasts' correspondence in the early 2010s. By his own account, the relationship he built with experienced American makers of the same period was decisive in raising his standards of craftsmanship; the extent to which this influence was shared with which masters is not detailed in independent sources. A. Petersen Pipes is known today less as a large-scale producer than as a bench belonging to the small-scale, personal wing of the American handmade pipe scene.
