Ahmet Buyukcopur is the name of a small-scale meerschaum pipe workshop operating in Eskişehir, and of the signature carried by the pipes that come out of it. Because the products are announced under the heading "White Pipe" via a promotional website launched in 2000, the brand is mostly known abroad under both names. The spelling of the name varies from source to source: the product label reads "Büyükcopur," while international records drop the Turkish letters and use "Buyukcopur." Since the exact Turkish spelling of the surname cannot be confirmed from the available documents, only the forms found in the sources are used here.

Workshop and Team

Records indicate the workshop employs two master carvers and an assistant, with a fixed division of labor between the masters: one handles smooth-surfaced pipes, the other takes on the carved work. The workshop's own promotional material describes production along this same split, calling the carved group "artwork" and making it up largely of figural head carvings. Some of the model pages name Adnan Biçer as the master carver; the rest of the team goes unnamed. Production runs on order rather than on stock, and each piece is carved individually. This arrangement is typical of workshops operating at artisan scale. Pipes leaving the workshop come with a product tag reading "Hand Made – Büyükcopur – In Turkey"; this is the main mark the community relies on to identify the brand.

Material and Flaw Correction

The workshop states that it works only with block meerschaum, not the material produced by pressing meerschaum dust with a binder. Natural stains, spots, and sand grains that appear during carving or after polishing block stone are, according to the workshop's own description, taken as evidence of the stone's authenticity. Two different approaches are used to address these: on carved pipes, the flaw is removed during the already-deep cutting process; on smooth-surfaced pipes, the stummel is reworked. This second process can result in a classically shaped piece being turned into a lattice pattern. This removes the stain and gives the pipe a new shape. The workshop illustrates this practice with its models numbered 540, 550, and 900, adding that not every classic model is reworked this way — the decision depends on the structure of the stone.

Model Lines

Alongside classic shapes, the catalogue includes a few special solutions. In the line called "Reverse," a second chamber is opened inside the shank; because of this chamber the stummel sits short and stout, and the mouthpiece is made of black acrylic. Another special line carries a 9 mm filter; here the filter housing is drilled not in the shank as usual but inside the mouthpiece, and the two pieces join with a push-and-pull connection. Wood-bodied calabash models, examples with a silver band fitted where the shank meets the mouthpiece, and custom carvings such as portraits and club crests are also made.

State of the Sources

The information base on the brand is thin. The Pipedia entry consists of a few sentences and has not been updated since 2015; part of the detail comes from a German pipe site's brand listing. The only independently verifiable date is that the promotional website's domain was registered on August 30, 2000; the site's copyright line also spans 2000-2019. The model pages remain accessible, but parts of the site are filled with clusters of unrelated links, suggesting the domain has not been maintained for years. No reliable record exists of the workshop's founding year or whether production continues today. The brand is nonetheless counted among the examples that have managed to reach beyond the small-workshop layer of Eskişehir meerschaum carving; its name first appearing in foreign sources coincides with this promotional site's launch in the early 2000s.
