Alinetu is a pipe workshop run alone by Daniele Carbini, working in the town of Tempio Pausania in Sardinia's Gallura region, Italy. The brand name comes from the Alinetu locality in Gallura, tied to Carbini's family roots; sources describe it variously as a mountain near Aggius or as a settlement name within the boundaries of Bortigiadas. The same region is one of the natural growing areas of the briar root used in pipe making, so the name carries both a sense of belonging and a mark of the raw material.
Workshop and Production
Born in 1972, Carbini, according to records, began making pipes in 2017 after roughly a decade of preparation and study, opening his workshop the same year in Tempio Pausania. Production is entirely handmade and small in scale: published profiles put annual output at forty to fifty pipes. At this scale, every stummel can be individually selected and shaped; there are no series molds or a fixed model catalogue.
The briar he uses comes partly from blocks selected locally in Gallura and partly from supplies provided by the maker Mimmo Romeo; blocks from this second source are said to be seasoned for at least a year, and often two to three. Mouthpieces are not bought ready-made but turned from vulcanite, cumberland, and methacrylate rod. Horn, hardwood, bone, or acrylic rings are used at the transitions between mouthpiece and stummel. These choices, in terms of mouthpiece materials, place the workshop close to the classic Italian school.
Approach to Shape
The brand's most cited trait is lightness; small and medium stummels are kept at a weight that can be comfortably carried in the teeth for long periods. Shapes stay true to classic lines: round bowls with preserved proportion, plain shank lines, and understated bands free of flourish. In block selection, pieces with a prominent flame grain are sought, making grain direction one of the criteria that determines the shape; finishing is done both smooth and rusticated. According to the Pipedia entry, the workshop's emblem is an "A" enclosed in a circle.
Influences and Circle
Carbini started out self-taught, later receiving technical training at the workshop of Mimmo Romeo and his wife Karin; he has explicitly said he considers this training decisive to his development. Records also note that in his early years he exchanged views with Augusto Spanu of the Spanu family and, through correspondence, with Maurizio Tombari. The workshop is associated with the circle around Accademia della Pipa, the association of Italian handmade pipe makers.
Alinetu is considered a typical example of the small-scale workshop generation that has become more prominent in Italy since the 2000s: an approach that, instead of competing with factory production, makes a limited number of hand-shaped pipes, each decided according to the character of its own block. Its Sardinian location, offering the ability to select raw material directly from the land it grows in, is highlighted as one of the elements that defines the workshop's identity.
