Altdukkan Meerschaum is the name of a venture announced in early 2015, reportedly aimed at bringing together Türkiye's meerschaum carvers and their work on a single website. Although it appears within brand lists in pipe sources, there is neither a workshop nor a signed production line behind it; the only trace left is a site shell that stayed live briefly and was never filled in with content. This entry reports only what can be confirmed from archival records.
Announcement and Uncertainty over the Name
The oldest record mentioning the venture is a pipe encyclopedia entry dated January 9, 2015. The entry states that the project would soon launch at meerschaum.co; later updates dropped this launch statement and marked the address as unreachable. The link between the name and the address comes entirely from here, since the word "Altdukkan" does not appear on any of the archived pages: the site identifies itself only under the listing "Meerschaum CO." No founder, maker, or workshop tied to the project's name appears in any record either.
The purpose itself relates directly to the structure of the craft. In Eskişehir, meerschaum work rests less on large factories than on small family benches and solo carvers; this scattered arrangement makes it hard for an enthusiast abroad to trace which piece came from which hand. The distinction between single-maker work and series production is covered in the artisan pipe and factory pipe entry.
The Site as Preserved in the Archive
The address's history is interrupted. In spring 2013 the domain had expired and was announced for deregistration on May 7, 2013; pages belonging to the venture appear only after this date. Timestamps embedded in the site files show the design elements were uploaded on January 6, 2015 — just three days before the encyclopedia entry. The footer listing gives Eskişehir as the location and 2014 as the year.
The system that went live was built on ready-made storefront software and launched in two languages, English and German. Sections were divided under the headings pipes, churchwarden models, calabash pipes, and accessories. Yet these headings are nearly empty: in the archived copies, the pipes section shows a single draft entry, and the other sections have none at all. The about page consists of nothing but a heading, with not a single line of text entered beneath it. In the side column, the template notice left over from installation sits untouched. In the blog section a few headings were opened on the discovery of meerschaum, on the museum in Eskişehir, and on the local festival, but these too were never filled in. In short, the archive shows a page whose design was chosen but that was never actually set up and run.
Aftermath
Copies from 2021 show the address parked for free by a Turkish hosting company, and a copy from January 2022 shows the term had expired and the address had been suspended again. Accordingly, the venture is not active today and left no name that continued in use. Altdukkan Meerschaum remains an unfinished chapter among the attempts to bring Eskişehir meerschaum carving online — remembered not as a brand but only through this record of an attempt.
