Altinok
A meerschaum brand based in Ankara, founded in 2002. Rather than a workshop with its own bench, it is a structure that brings together the work of independent carvers working in Eskişehir under a single name.

Altinok is a Turkish meerschaum pipe brand based in Ankara. Founded in 2002, it has run its sales through its own website ever since. The brand name, in foreign correspondence and in the site address, drops the Turkish letter "ı."
Founder and Founding
Founder Sinan Altınok came to pipe making from outside the trade. According to his own profile, he was born in Ankara in 1958, studied electronics engineering, and worked in information technology for more than twenty years, entering the pipe business after retirement. These personal details rest on the brand's own statements and have not been separately confirmed by independent records. The founding year given as 2002 is consistent with the site's copyright line.
Not a Single Workshop but a Network of Makers
Altinok's way of working differs from a classic artisan workshop built on a single maker's bench. The work of independent carvers is gathered under one brand umbrella, and each pipe is presented individually under the name of the maker who worked on it. The brand's own pages name İsmail Bağlan, Kudret Gezer, Medet Kara, Mustafa Albayrak, and Davorin Denović; of these, Bağlan and Gezer are said to work in Eskişehir. The same source gives Bağlan's birth year as 1958 and states he learned carving in 1970 from his older brother Kemal Bağlan.
In a structure like this, the brand's signature cannot be sought in a single carving style. What distinguishes it is the selection of the stone and the roster of makers brought together; quite different hands can produce work under the same name. This model is regarded as the natural result, in a country where production is spread across small workshops and individual carvers, of an intermediary layer that gathers the work and delivers it to buyers abroad.
Product Range
Classic shapes dominate the catalogue, but the range is not limited to these. It includes calabash models with a stone-carved stummel, long-stemmed churchwarden examples, figural carvings shaped as human and animal heads, twin-stem designs joining two mouthpieces to a single bowl, unpolished "natural"-surfaced pipes, models drilled for a 9 mm filter, and cigarette holders. On some of the calabash models the body is made from African-sourced okoumé wood. On some pipes a 925 sterling silver band is fitted where the bowl meets the mouthpiece.
Source of the Stone
The brand states that it works with block meerschaum — that is, not with material obtained by pressing crushed stone with a binder, but with stone carved in the mass form it came out of the mine. Türkiye's main deposits of this quality stone lie in the region that has fed the Eskişehir meerschaum carving tradition for centuries; which particular mine the brand's blocks come from is not specified.
Altinok has documented a mine visit with photographs on its own site. These records describe mines run at a family scale, often by a handful of relatives; stone extracted from depths of up to thirty meters using hand-built equipment such as wooden ladders and hand winches; and the impossibility of predicting which shaft will yield a usable block before digging begins. According to its own statement, the brand has to date shipped to more than fifty countries.
