Amorelli is an Italian pipe workshop founded in Caltanissetta, in the interior of Sicily, and named after its founder, Salvatore "Totò" Amorelli. Records indicate that Amorelli made his first pipe in 1979 and continued production in the following years with a small team, eventually making the brand known beyond Italy as well. The workshop stands out for building a distinct, island-based focus outside the established Italian pipemaking centers concentrated around Pesaro and Como in the north.
Sicilian Briar and Preparation
Amorelli's most emphasized choice is limiting its wood supply to a single geography: the workshop works exclusively with briar gathered in Sicily. Sources state that the blocks are extracted from the Fiumedinisi region near Messina, and that harvesting, boiling, and seasoning are all carried out under the master's supervision. The blocks are reportedly left to air-dry for about five years before being worked; this rest period is meant to let the curing stage proceed slowly and evenly, so the wood dries without cracking. The lightness and porosity attributed to island briar is a characterization frequently repeated in the maker's own promotional material; it rests on the workshop's relationship with its own material rather than on any comparative measurement.
Shape Families and the Gold Band
The workshop's output rests on named shape families as much as on individual pieces. Names such as Busbee, Frac, Lyra, Fish Tail, Nail, and Ghibli do not denote a quality tier but a specific bowl-and-shank construction; in this respect the naming approach sits closer to the freehand tradition than to classic English numbering. Showpiece one-off pieces made outside these families are referred to as "Unicum." Each finished pipe is graded with stars according to the wood's grain: the scale runs from one to five, with five stars reserved for the most pronounced grain.
The brand's most easily recognized mark is the thin gold band set where the shank meets the mouthpiece. The band is not purely decorative: it also serves as an alignment mark that ensures the mouthpiece seats in the same position every time it is inserted. In most sources the band is described as 18-carat gold. The same jewelry-level skill has also made it possible to produce individual pieces set with diamonds.
Recognition
Amorelli pipes have been distributed in Italy as well as in Germany, the United States, Canada, and Far Eastern markets. The workshop's reputation is also fed in part by showpiece one-off pieces made to commission; according to accounts, special shapes have been made for statesmen and well-known figures. Since the details of these pieces largely rest on the maker's own promotional material, they have not been independently verified. The brand's everyday output, by contrast, follows the pattern seen among second-generation workshops in the history of the Italian handmade pipe: a small number of craftsmen, limited production, and material identified with a single region.
