Anton & Co. Pipes is a family-scale pipe workshop working in the city of Lviv in western Ukraine. What sets the workshop apart from its European counterparts is that for a long time it built its production not on briar but on maple, a wood plentiful in the country.
Production Built on Maple
Maple craftsmanship has a long history in Ukraine; the wood is easily found locally, is neither rare nor endangered, works well on the lathe, and has no pronounced flavor of its own. In a country where briar supply depends entirely on imports, this offers the workshop a foundation that is consistent both economically and technically. Oak, pear, and bog oak, known as morta, are among the other woods used from time to time.
Pipes made from imported briar entered production after 2020 as well. Their sandblasting is not outsourced but done in-house; the small pits and marks that appear on the surface are not covered up but treated as a natural part of the material. In the same years, pipe stands made from ash and other wooden accessories for pipe smoking also began to be produced.
Father and Son
At the center of the business are father Alexander Antonenko and son Ivan Antonenko. According to records, Alexander is a former fighter-jet pilot; he founded a small workshop making wooden goods and cigarette holders in the late 1990s and expanded the product line toward pipes in the early 2000s. Ivan joined the business in 2010 after graduating from the national forestry university in Lviv, bringing knowledge of wood into the workshop through an academic channel as well.
Shape Language and Current Status
The most recognizable detail of Anton & Co. pipes is the aluminum or brass ring fitted between the shank and the mouthpiece. Most of the mouthpieces are made of acrylic and are also produced in-house. The shapes generally stay close to the classic line; some of the pipes are bored for a 9 mm filter, while others are left unfiltered. The workshop is also known to work on figural pipes and on slender "pencil shank" forms rarely seen in factory production, and to hand-cast brass tampers.
The Antonenkos hold an active place in Ukraine's pipe community; they are reported to have supported some of the country's slow-smoking competitions. After 2022, wartime conditions removed the workshop's principal market, and the maker has since sought new distribution channels, particularly toward North America.
