The Directory of Australian Pipe Brands brings together, in alphabetical order, pipe names produced in Australia or tied to the country through their stamp and sales channel. Australia is not among the countries with an established factory tradition; the names on record consist either of one-person workshops, private-label lines that large stores had made overseas, or makers who emigrated from other countries. The entries below summarize only documented facts; points on which the sources are silent are noted explicitly.

Brands

  • Bullfrog Pipes — The name of the one-person workshop run by Jeremiah Mierke in Melbourne. The shape regarded as the brand's signature is a Devil Anse interpretation, its bowl treated to recall a eucalyptus gumnut. Mierke's work remained at hobby level for a long time; from around 2010 until 2017 he turned out only one or two pipes a year, for himself and acquaintances. The turning point came at the end of 2017, when a friend who saw a pipe he had made for himself asked for one like it. By 2018 his output had risen to roughly a pipe a week, and the year closed with thirty-five pipes made.

  • David Jones Sydney — The stamp marking pipes sold under its own name by the Sydney-based David Jones store. The store's history reaches back to 1838, to the Welsh merchant David Jones who emigrated to Australia; it is remembered as the oldest department store still operating under its founding name unchanged, and has belonged to the South African firm Woolworths Holdings since 2014. One documented pipe is a plain apple-shaped billiard; stamp records tie it to production in England by Comoy's of London, pointing to the factory on Prescott Street.

  • LBM — A stamp associated with the Melbourne firm Levy Bros & Co. No information is on record about the firm's role in the pipe trade, its manufacturing setup, or its period of activity; only the name and city are known.

  • Mercedes — The name given to a pipe set produced locally in Australia in the early 1960s. The set's workmanship sits at a high standard, and its preparation shows evident care for presentation to its intended buyer. The maker, place of manufacture, and how long the brand lasted are undocumented; Mercedes today can only be traced through the individual pieces collectors report.

  • Samsel — The eponymous stamp of Polish-born Tomasz Samsel. Samsel began the trade in 1987 under the guidance of Polish maker Ryszard Filar, and has lived in Australia since 1998. He is known for free-form, especially sculptural bodies; he uses ebonite for his stems and signs his pipes with the "T. SAMSEL" stamp.
