Bay Pipe is the brand of a Turkish pipe workshop in Eskişehir that carves block meerschaum. The name appears in some records written as one word, "Baypipe," and on the brand's own older pages as "Emre Bay Pipe Meerschaum." Behind the workshop is master carver Emre Mangaltepe, who came to the craft from mine work. The founding year has not been disclosed; archive records show the brand's website was already online by 2013 at the latest.
The Master's Path
According to his published biography, Mangaltepe was born in 1986 in Eskişehir's Mihalıççık district, worked outside the craft between 2003 and 2007, and turned to meerschaum mining in 2007. He describes having learned carving afterward, going from workshop to workshop alongside masters, and traveling to Denmark to see how the craft was practiced elsewhere. He has served multiple terms as chairman of the Eskişehir Meerschaum Handicrafts Association, and spoke about the story of meerschaum at a TEDx event in 2019.
The Workshop's Output
Bay Pipe pipes are not made on a production line but shaped by hand one at a time. According to the master's own account, the raw stone passes through twelve separate stages from cleaning to final polish. The brand's old catalog groups its products roughly into five clusters: classic straight shapes (billiard, bulldog, rhodesian, canadian, poker), embellished pipes decorated with calligraphic and miniature motifs, figural carvings with human and animal heads, freeform freehand pieces that don't follow a set mold, and portrait pipes worked from photographs. Alongside these, the workshop also makes meerschaum cigarette and cigar holders, as well as decorative objects like busts and animal figures. Some pipes are said to use silver bands and bamboo inserts. Portrait commissions, per the master, take between three and ten days, and this likeness work is considered the most demanding part of the job.
Motifs and Markets
The workshop's output goes mostly abroad. According to information the master has given the press, the main buying countries are Denmark, Germany, Italy, China, and the United States. The same accounts note that taste in motifs shifts from market to market: Greek mythological scenes stand out in Europe, Bavarian-flavored models in Germany, zodiac animals and dragons in China, and bison along with Native American symbols in America. Such a practice — choosing motifs by the buyer's country — is common among meerschaum workshops.
The Stone and the Craft Today
Alongside the bench, Mangaltepe is also involved on the raw-material side: he chairs the board of a projected meerschaum quarry operation in the Karatepe neighborhood of Odunpazarı. In an interview in 2024 he said there had been no official mining in the area since 1993 and that they were bringing the illegal extraction under legal footing; the quarry project also drew opposition from surrounding neighborhoods. In the same interview he noted that the youngest of the workers digging the shafts were in their fifties and sixties, while export demand was rising. According to the association's figures, Eskişehir has 135 registered masters listed with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, some eight hundred people work in the sector, and roughly ninety percent of workshop production is exported. Within this picture, Bay Pipe is one of the workshops carrying on the Eskişehir meerschaum carving tradition. The baypipe.net address given in the Pipedia record no longer works today; the domain had shifted to unrelated content by 2021 at the latest.
