Bazzanelli, full name Cachimbos Bazzanelli, is a pipe workshop operating in the municipality of Timbó, in Brazil's Santa Catarina state. Given that pipe making in the country rests largely on one-person workshops, founder Mauro Marcos Bazzanella, with more than twenty years of continuous production, is considered one of Brazil's best-known native signatures.

A Choice of Wood

What sets the workshop apart is that it does not limit itself to briar, almost the sole material of the European tradition. The wood most often encountered in Bazzanelli bowls is imbuia, a dark, distinctly grained species from southern Brazil's forests. Native woods such as angico, walnut, and açoita-cavalo are also worked with; briar, meanwhile, is imported. This range places the workshop among the select signatures producing pipes from woods other than briar. Durability, heat resistance, and not interfering with the taste of the smoke are given as the reasons for preferring native woods.

Acrylic is generally used for the stems. In terms of stem materials, this choice is consistent for a workshop seeking resistance to surface discoloration in a humid climate. A significant share of the models are made with a 9 mm filter bore; this measurement shows that European convention has taken root in the Brazilian market, and it means the workshop keeps to the continental European standard when it comes to pipe filters.

Shape and Method of Production

Production does not rely on mass molds but on shaping each bowl individually by hand. The catalog is dominated by Brazilian interpretations of classic English shapes, especially the billiard family; calabash-look bowls and long-shanked fantasy models are also found. Because the grain of the wood falls differently every time in hand-worked pieces, no two bowls made from the same model are said to be exact copies of each other. Decoration is generally measured: apart from metal bands and spacer rings, surfaces are mostly left polished and plain.

Founding and Recognition

Records give the workshop's founding date as July 29, 2001; the business began as a small work area Bazzanella set up in the back of his house. According to the account, there was no established customer base in the early period; the founder took his pipes and traveled around the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo to promote them. The brand's domestic recognition is largely attributed to this period of direct contact. In later years promotion shifted mainly to online channels.

Bazzanelli is not assessed on the same scale as internationally recognized collector signatures or Europe's established factories. Its importance lies in having brought native Brazilian woods regularly into pipe making and in keeping handmade production going without interruption in the domestic market. The dates and names surrounding its founding rest largely on the maker's own promotional texts and have not been separately confirmed by an independent archival record.
