Benni Pipes is the brand under which Danish maker Benni Jørgensen stamps pipes with his own name. The brand only began carrying the maker's signature in the second half of his career: for many years, work off Jørgensen's bench circulated under the stamp of W. Ø. Larsen, Copenhagen's established tobacconist, so the link between maker and product was invisible from the outside.

The Master Behind the House Brand

W. Ø. Larsen, which had run its own pipe workshop in the days of Sven Knudsen, did not continue that in later years and instead handed production to independent makers working at their own benches. Jørgensen joined this arrangement in 1980; this date appears consistently in both the Pipedia entry and independent brand records. He began under Teddy Knudsen's supervision before working on his own. Over these more than twenty years he specialized mainly in continuous straight grain pipes; his collaboration with Ole and Inge Larsen shaped both his design language and his standards of acceptance. Because pipes sold at Larsen's were stamped uniformly with the shop's name, the maker's identity did not reach the buyer. Records show this arrangement ended when the shop closed in February 2005; from that date Jørgensen carried on production under his own name. Because he was already a recognized name within the community, the transition passed without friction.

The Road to the Bench

The master's turn toward pipes came about through an occupational accident. Records place Jørgensen's birth in 1955; he trained as a carpenter and worked in construction until he injured his back in 1980, and doctors told him to stay away from the trade. His new pursuit came from close at hand: when his employer, a pipe enthusiast, showed him a pipe he had made himself, the two acquired the necessary equipment and set about trying it together. The region he lived in was also favorable for this new interest. In southern Sjælland, the workshop of Teddy Knudsen, one of the leading names of the day, was in the same area. Knudsen gave his new neighbor briar, answered his technical questions, and advised him to apply to W. Ø. Larsen.

Workshop, Pace, and Signature

In the early 2000s he set up his own workshop attached to his house in a village near Præstø. He is said to have taken finishing one pipe a day as his benchmark, with an actual average around two hundred a year. He does his own sandblasting in his own cabinet; because he prefers a very fine abrasive, it takes a long time for the surface to settle into the desired texture. This care means his sandblasted work is sought after as much as his smooth pieces.

Stamping is simple: pipes carry "Benni," "Handmade," and "Made in Denmark." Quality grading depends on the finish; smooth pipes have three ascending tiers from 1 to 3, sandblasted pipes use 1 and 2. In both finishes, the finest examples are also marked with a swan figure. Stems are mostly vulcanite, with acrylic also seen on sandblasted bowls; Cumberland or amber is fitted on request. Materials such as bamboo and oak appear only in thin bands, used sparingly.

He is not the only pipe maker in the family: his son Lasse Skovgaard also works in the same area. Sources diverge on whether the two share the same workshop or work at two separate benches a few minutes apart. What both accounts agree on is that father and son frequently work together on new surface treatments and color experiments.
