Bertoldi is a pipe maker founded in the town of Timbó, in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. What brothers Idelfonso and Valmor Bertoldi started as a small workshop in 1984 has run for decades and is considered the most visible name in the country's pipe production. The brand operates under the Só Cachimbos Comercial umbrella; of the founding brothers, Idelfonso Bertoldi is recorded as the business's sole owner.

Founding and Early Years

When founded, the business carried the name Bertoldi & Bertoldi, and its output was exceedingly modest: an average of ten pipes a day, and in only a single model at that. This first model, called "Elite," is recorded only as a straight-shanked shape; it appears to have been an undecorated design close to the billiard family. At the end of the first year the brothers decided to add bent-shank models to the catalogue as well; this step required both hiring their first employee and serious work on production technique. The goal was clear: to bring domestic production up to a standard comparable with the imported pipes then entering the Brazilian market.

A Correction in Mouthpiece Bore

One of the most lasting decisions the workshop made in its early period concerned mouthpiece design. Records indicate that Brazilian-made pipes of that era had a mouthpiece bore of 5-6 millimeters; this measurement both stiffened the draw and left a rough feel in the mouth. Bertoldi redesigned its mouthpieces, switching to the 4-millimeter bore already established on imported pipes. This change, seemingly a small detail, is remembered as the first concrete step in the brand's pursuit of quality in domestic production.

Series and Material

Over time the workshop added the Hobby, Maestro, and Montana series alongside Elite, plus a Bertoldi line bearing the family's surname. According to the company's own figures, the catalogue today holds around 150 models.

On the material side, the brand took a path that set it apart from Brazilian workshops working with native woods. It began importing Erica arborea — that is, briar — the root underlying traditional European production, and started making its Maestro series from this wood; the company states in its own promotional material that it is the only importer of Erica arborea in Brazil. This claim has not been independently confirmed. Series made with native woods still continue; that Brazilian workshops work with species other than briar is a good example within the broader picture of alternative woods.

Scale and Markets

According to figures the company gave in the early 2010s, the business had 22 direct employees, with monthly output running around 14,000 pipes; about 6,000 of these are classified as top-tier models. This scale makes Bertoldi unusually large in a field dominated by one-man workshops. The brand also states that it exports to Portugal, Spain, Argentina, and Uruguay. It cannot be said to have wide recognition among collectors outside Brazil; even so, it is counted among the few examples showing the continuity of domestic production in South America.
