Bjarne is a pipe brand Danish maker Bjarne Nielsen (1941-2008) founded in Copenhagen in 1973. The brand was less the signature of a single bench than a system for gathering and distributing: the work of Danish carvers Nielsen selected was brought together under a shared stamp and sent out from there to foreign markets. For this reason, Nielsen's name is remembered less as one of the makers behind Danish School pipes and more as one of the agents who put those pipes into international circulation.
From a Ministry to the Pipe Business
Records indicate Nielsen's relationship with the pipe began at sixteen, when he also made his first pipes for his own use. The first part of his career, though, was spent far from the bench: after studying business administration in Copenhagen, he was assigned at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to build overseas connections for exporting firms. This work put him directly face to face with the demand for freehand pipes in the 1960s; the capacity of Danish workshops was not enough to meet the demand coming in. Nielsen tried to fill the gap with pipes he made himself, and the orders he received soon reached a volume that could not be carried on alongside a civil-service post. In 1973 he left the ministry to take up the business full-time.
Workshop Arrangement and Makers
Once it became clear that sales, production, and collections could not all be run by one person, Nielsen began taking on carvers. Part of the first team was made up of names who had left Preben Holm's workshop, which employed a large crew in those years; by the early 1990s seven carvers are reported to have been working there. Because the carver's name is not stamped on Bjarne pipes, whose work belongs to which piece can only be guessed at from grade and style. Among the names working with high-grade briar blocks are Tonni Nielsen and Ph. Vigen; Ole Bandholm is also mentioned in records. Most of the plentifully produced budget line came from the hand of Mogens Johansen, known by the signature "Johs."
Stamps and Grades
The distinction between lines is read from how the brand name is written: standard production carries only the "Bjarne" stamp, while the upper grades are stamped "Bjarne Nielsen" and graded with letters. Sources do not agree on the scope of the letter scale; some stamp compilations give a short sequence running from A to D, while others give a longer ranking topped by AX and descending in the alphabet as far as J. The Viking mark is also recorded in sources as a secondary name for the brand.
Markets and the Brand's End
In the early years, the whole output was sent to the United States. Attending the pipe fair in Frankfurt at the end of the 1970s opened Germany as a second market; German buyers' preference, however, leaned not toward freehand but toward classic shapes, so a separate line made up of traditional forms was set up. This line caught on, and Germany remained the brand's top-selling market for a long time. By the 1990s the pipes were found in more than thirty countries, and Nielsen spent more than half of each year on the road, meeting with retailers and smokers. The catalogue also included a series called "Giant," made well above usual measurements.
According to records, Nielsen died in February 2008, at sixty-six, following a heart attack. Since no one stepped forward to take over the business, the brand ended together with its founder; no new pipes were made under the Bjarne name. A few pipe-tobacco blends bearing his name are reported to still be made by a manufacturer in Germany.
