Björn of Sweden is the brand name Swedish maker Björn Bengtsson stamps on his pipes. Records indicate Bengtsson, born in 1947 in Malmö, learned the craft not in Sweden but in Denmark, at Poul Rasmussen's workshop in Copenhagen; for this reason, although his production has taken place in his own country, it is technically tied to the Danish School tradition. His pipes never reached serial-production scale at any point: it is a limited total, faithful to classic proportions, single-toned, and largely destined for foreign markets.

Stamp and Dating

Bengtsson's pipes are distinguished by the "BY BJÖRN" and "SWEDEN" stamp struck across two lines. Alongside the stamp sits a three- or four-digit number; the leading digit or digits give the month, the trailing two the year. On this reading, a pipe stamped "1086" is an October 1986 piece. The practical result matters to collectors: while the work of many makers of the same generation can only be roughly dated through shape and material, here the exact month of a given pipe's production can be read directly.

Training in Copenhagen

His entry into the trade arose from a family need. Repair work left at his mother's tobacconist shop in Malmö could not be handled locally, and pipes had to be sent one by one to individual makers. It was thought that her son, having finished school, could fill this gap. The first name approached was Sixten Ivarsson in Copenhagen; when the answer was negative, Poul Rasmussen came next. Under an agreement reached in 1964 for 500 Swedish kronor, sixteen-year-old Björn moved to Copenhagen and worked at the workshop for about a year and a half.

After Rasmussen's death in October 1967, the shop and workshop passed to his wife, Anne Julie. At Anne Julie's invitation, offering work to the names Rasmussen had trained so as not to halt production, Bengtsson moved to Denmark a second time and made pipes alongside Teddy Knudsen and Anne Julie's brother until 1974. Anne Julie's own start in pipe making under her own name falls in later years. Bengtsson settled in Malmö in 1974 together with his Danish wife.

Independent Production, Shape, and Finish

In the years he worked under his own brand, his output stayed at around a hundred pipes a year. Most buyers were in Germany and Japan; the share going to the Danish and Swedish domestic markets was small. When demand for pipes generally narrowed in the early 1990s, he began earning his living from another line of work and cut production to part-time; the work of this period went mostly to Germany.

On finish, he stayed within a narrow, unvarying frame. He finished his selected briar blocks with a smooth polish that let the grain stand out, using the same dark-brown tone throughout. Among his surface treatments, he is said to have turned to rustication only where he judged it necessary, and not to have used sandblasting; even so, since a few sandblasted examples do turn up in estate circulation, this preference should not be taken as an absolute rule.

Later Years

Sources do not agree on the maker's date of death. One record gives June 2023, while the Swedish Pipe Club's May 2025 bulletin places the death at a more recent date; the birth year given also does not fully match the age given in these records. For this reason neither date is presented as settled data. What is certain is that production has ended, and that pipes that have changed hands are today found only in collector circulation.
