Brakner is a Danish name that emerged within Copenhagen's handmade pipe scene in the postwar years, owing its fame almost entirely to a single surface treatment. The master's civil name was Peter Micklson; he later changed his surname to Brakner and stamped his pipes under that name. Neither his birth year nor his death date is clear in the records; his output, however, is dated to the early cohort of what is known as the Danish School.

Workshop Circle

He entered the trade at Suhr's Pibemageri in Copenhagen, that is, the Teofil Suhr workshop. That workshop's foreman at the time was Sixten Ivarsson, who shaped the design language of Danish pipemaking. According to a piece of information passed down in pipe literature, Brakner is said to have facilitated Poul Rasmussen's entry into the workshop, showing him the basic fundamentals of the craft in a short, intensive course; since this detail rests only on secondary sources, it should be treated with caution. Brakner's period working for someone else did not last long; he went into production under his own name at an early date.

A Lost Surface: Antique

The master's real signature is the extremely fine-grained rustication he developed himself and called "Antique." The pits are small and regular compared to the era's habit of coarse carving; for this reason it is mostly described in the literature as "micro-rustication." Brakner kept the method hidden from his fellow makers. According to an account attributed to Kai Nielsen, he showed the technique to only one person; with that person's departure as well, the details of the method are unknown today. Kent Rasmussen, of the following generation, has stated that he considered this surface his starting point when developing his own rustication method. Smooth-finished Brakner pipes are rare; known examples include a plateau-topped type and one marked "Jewel of Denmark."

Series and Marks

A significant portion of Brakner's pipes were distributed through the tobacconist W.Ø. Larsen; the master was a close friend of shop owner Ole Larsen, and this relationship lasted until Larsen began employing his own staff carvers. The shop's 1960/61 export catalogue lists three separate series: Antique, Bella Danica, and Royal Danois. All three are listed with either the tan (fawn) or black variant of the Antique surface. The name of Royal Danois, which forms the top tier of these series, comes from the Royal Danish Guard regiment founded in 1689; the shank mark on these pipes carries the phrases "Hand Cut" and "Denmark" alongside the brand name.

Considered one of the names to first bring top-tier Danish handmade pipes to the United States market, Brakner found notable recognition there in the early 1970s. Production ended with the master's unexpected death (the date is not recorded in sources). Though his name has receded somewhat over time in the shadow of the longer-lived workshops of the same generation, his pipes continue to be mentioned in the collecting literature because of their surface craftsmanship and the connection they carry to early Danish design language.
