BriarWorks is a pipe manufacturer founded by American pipemakers Todd Johnson and Pete Prevost in the state of Tennessee. The brand's founding idea was to bring the proportion and finishing sensibility particular to hand-shaped pipes into a mass-production framework. In this respect the business sits somewhere between classic briar factories and one-man benches.

Founding and Relocation

The two makers began preparatory work in 2012; setting up the machinery, developing the shapes, and designing the production flow took more than a year. The workshop began production in Nashville in 2013. Pete Prevost took over the company's presidency in 2016; Todd Johnson, in the period that followed, stepped back from day-to-day production and returned to making handmade pipes under his own name. Records indicate production moved in 2018, within the same state, to Columbia, south of Nashville, and has continued there since.

Production Philosophy

BriarWorks's distinguishing trait is that briar bowls are machine-worked with the finishing completed by hand. Since the stages that determine dimensions are left to the machine, different examples of the same shape come out close to one another; the sanding, polishing, stamping, and mouthpiece fitting are then carried out by people who have made handmade pipes for years. That the staff is drawn from makers who also produce under their own signature is the main reason the brand is often mentioned as sitting squarely between factory pipes and artisan pipes. Surfaces are offered smooth, sandblasted, and rustic; see the entry on surface treatments for these terms. Alongside its own brands, the workshop also does private-label production for other firms.

Product Lines

  • Classic: The core line, based on shapes established in factory shape catalogues of the first half of the twentieth century.

  • Original: A line of shapes original to the workshop, drawn by the makers on staff.

  • Moonshine: A line in which established shapes are interpreted with freer proportions and colours, recognised by the white lightning-bolt mark on the mouthpiece.

  • Signature: A line in which the signature shapes of recognised makers are adapted for mass production. The first was Todd Johnson's briar calabash design; a shape drawn by Adam Davidson was added in spring 2016.

Alongside these lines, Bambino — a small-scale adaptation of the Classic shapes with a mouthpiece set into the bowl — and Handmade pipes, shaped entirely by hand by the makers, have also appeared in the brand's catalogue. Bambino keeps the same chamber diameter as Classic, while materials such as vulcanite and boxwood are used in the Handmade pieces.

Staff

The workshop's staff includes makers also known under their own names. Sam Adebayo, Micah Redmond, and Bill Shalosky joined the team within 2015, with Jesse Perdue taking on production technology and design. These names continue making pipes under their own signatures outside working hours and are associated with the American handmade pipe scene (Go West) that became prominent in the 2000s. The company completed its tenth anniversary in 2023 and continues production at its workshop in Columbia.
