BS Pipes

BS Pipes is a briar pipe workshop in Istanbul signed with the initials of maker Birol Salman's own name. Because the meerschaum workshops of Eskişehir are the first thing that comes to mind when pipes are mentioned in Türkiye, workshops that work heath root from start to finish under one hand have remained few in the country; BS Pipes is one of the names counted within that narrow circle. Salman's name is known not only for his pipes but also for the tobacco blends brought to market under the Bosphorus brand.

Maker and Scale

According to international pipe sources, Birol Salman was born in Istanbul in 1968, began making pipes in 2007, and started selling his output from 2010 onward. The same record lists his previous trade as electrician and his annual output at around a hundred pipes. None of these details rest on independent documentation and should not be treated as settled; the copyright line on the workshop's own website, meanwhile, spans 2008-2023, and the records do not fully agree on the starting year.

Salman's name also appears in the records of the local pipe community. He is listed among the competitors representing the Yeditepe Pipe Club in the Istanbul Pipe Association's results chart for the 2015 Istanbul Pipe Cup. In competitions of this kind, the measure is not speed but how long a pipe can be smoked without going out on a set amount of tobacco.

Materials and Method

According to the maker's own promotional text, the briar preferred in the workshop comes from Algeria and Corsica; blocks from the Greek plateau are used occasionally as well. The international record adds Spanish and Italian briar to this list, though the two lists do not match. Alongside briar, bowls are also reportedly cut from olive, cherry, and pear wood. German-made acrylic is used for stems.

What the workshop foregrounds is method: shaping is carried out with classic hand tools and auxiliary machinery, with no computer-controlled (CNC) equipment involved. The maker writes that he makes his own knives for rustic surface finishes, and that he either made most of his tools himself or adapted them to suit his needs.

The product range published over the years covers both classic and free-form shapes together. Alongside billiard, rhodesian, bulldog, poker, pot, lovat, dublin, canadian, oom paul, tomato, volcano, and acorn shapes, there is a substantial freehand group; sandblast, rustic, and smooth finishes, bamboo shank inserts, and horn details also appear in the range.

Bosphorus Tobaccos

Alongside its pipes, the workshop's website maintained a separate tobacco section. Blends known under the Bosphorus name include names such as English Mixture, Balkan Mixture, Balkan Flake, Burley Flake, İstanbul Flake, Golden Blend, and Sevenhills Flake. The brand has also been registered in international tobacco review databases. According to foreign sources, the blends are prepared largely with leaf grown in Türkiye, particularly Adıyaman oriental tobacco.

Status of the Records

BS Pipes is an example of a craftsman's workshop that works piece by piece rather than from mass-production molds; annual output of around a hundred pipes is a small number on an international scale. The brand's recognition among local pipe smokers is explained by the fact that briar craftsmanship in Türkiye is carried on by only a handful of people. For many years the brand shared images from the workshop through its own site and social media accounts; most of these pages can today only be viewed through web archives. As of July 2026, the site's domain does not resolve. Whether this points to a permanent closure or a temporary interruption, and the workshop's current production status, has not been confirmed.
