C. P. Heininger & Company was a tobacco goods firm founded in San Francisco in the early 1880s that sold both pipes of its own manufacture and imported foreign brands. According to city directories, its founder Charles Peter Heininger is recorded as a pipe dealer in 1882; the firm's name was known in the tobacco goods trade on America's West Coast for more than forty years.

The Founder and the Firm's Beginnings

Charles Peter Heininger was born in Philadelphia in 1857 and worked in various workshops in that city in his youth. He settled in San Francisco in 1881, founding his business that same year or shortly after. The business's early years were not steady: around 1885 he withdrew from the tobacco goods trade and turned to publishing, then returned to importing and manufacturing pipes and tobacco accessories in 1889. The publishing side was never entirely abandoned; library records list Heininger's name as the publisher of albums depicting views of the Pacific coast and San Francisco. This dual structure also shaped the firm's identity: alongside pipes, the store carried scenic albums, canes, and ornamental items made from local woods.

Production and the Brands Sold

The firm's production arrangement is an example of a model seen in many American tobacco goods workshops of the period: raw material was brought in from overseas, while processing and finishing were carried out with local labor in San Francisco. The main products of this arrangement were pipes and cigarette holders. Records indicate the workshop was known for working in ivory and amber; both were considered top-tier stem materials in those years, demanding skilled handling.

Alongside its own C.P.H. line, the shelves also carried pipes brought in from abroad, chief among them the English-made GBD. The range of materials was kept broad: meerschaum, clay pipes, and corncob pipes were sold side by side in the same store. Collector records report that a partner named John McDonald joined the business in the second half of the 1890s, but that the partnership was short-lived and ended at the turn of the century.

Addresses, the Earthquake, and Closure

The sequence of addresses that can be traced through city directories shows how the business grew. Starting in small shops on Sacramento and Montgomery streets in the 1880s, the firm operated on Sansome Street from 1891 onward, then moved to the city's commercial center, Market Street, in the mid-1890s, remaining there until 1905.

The earthquake of April 18, 1906, and the fire that followed brought this arrangement to an end in a single day. The shop on Market Street became unusable along with the entire surrounding neighborhood; Heininger lost not only his place of business but his home as well. The firm continued operating by moving to surviving neighborhoods, first Haight, then Guerrero Street.

Records indicate the firm continued selling tobacco goods until 1924, after which it was listed for a while longer as a seller of various gift items. Heininger is reported to have settled with his family in Marin County, north of the bay, in the early 1920s; he died in 1943. The firm no longer exists today; its name survives mainly through the city directories and collector records that document the early tobacco goods trade of the American West Coast.
