Calabria Pipe is a family workshop operating in the town of Mandatoriccio, in the Calabria region of southern Italy. Taking its name directly from its region, the business is known in the pipe world under two distinct identities: on one hand a supplier producing briar blanks sold to other workshops, and on the other a manufacturer turning out finished pipes under its own name.

Mandatoriccio and the Briar Tradition

Mandatoriccio, on the slopes of the Sila Greca, a little inland from the Ionian coast, is a small settlement, yet its place in the pipe-material trade is considered out of proportion to the town's size. According to accounts, the working of tree heath (Erica arborea) roots grown in the region has continued here for roughly a century. The burl that forms where the root meets the trunk — what Italians call the ciocco — is cut, boiled, dried, and, after a long resting period, turned into blocks. The pre-pipe state of these blocks is called abbozzo, or ebauchon in international trade. Although not mentioned as often as Tuscany or Liguria, Calabria is counted as one of the established links in this chain. For a general framework covering all stages of the material, see the entry on briar block supply.

The Carlino Family

The Carlino family behind the business says it has worked in this trade for generations, though how many generations has not been confirmed by independent records. Vito Carlino has long been known as a blank producer, selling the blocks and plateaux he cut to other workshops. With Carlo Massimo Carlino's entry into the business — the date is unknown — production was no longer limited to semi-finished material, and hand-finished pipes entered the program as well. Trade records list the business under both Vito's and Carlo Carlino's names; promotional texts refer to father and son together.

The workshop's product range extends from rough blocks and plateaux to pre-drilled blanks, from semi-finished pipes to acrylic and ebonite stems. This breadth shows that the business works both for end users and for other pipe makers.

Approach and Grading

What the workshop foregrounds is that its production chain is gathered under one roof: block selection, cutting, drilling, and finishing are all done in the same place, mostly by hand. Another point the family emphasizes is curing: letting briar dry at its own pace is preferred over artificial methods that shorten the process. Drying the wood without disturbing its pore structure is a material philosophy common among Italian workshops; a similar emphasis appears in the accounts of established houses such as Castello.

Pipes are graded according to the grain pattern on the wood's surface. The entry on grain in briar offers a detailed framework for how criteria such as the density and continuity of straight grain, or the distinctness of the birdseye pattern, are read. The top grades consist of pieces from the small number of blocks whose grain comes out clean; the lower grades hold plainer work in classic shapes.
