Caminetto is a brand born in 1968 in the town of Cucciago, in the province of Como, that quickly became one of the best-known names in postwar Italian pipe making. It is remembered for the mustache emblem carved into its stem, its rustic Business finish, and its rapid rise in the American market. When the founding team broke apart in 1979, the brand fell into a period of limbo before being revived over the following decade under the Ascorti family.
A Workshop Founded in Cucciago
Both masters who founded the brand came from the Castello bench in Cantù. Giuseppe Ascorti, known to friends as "Peppino," had worked alongside Carlo Scotti since 1959 and aimed to set up on his own; the small greengrocer's shop his wife Paola had taken over financed this goal, and the necessary bench and machinery were assembled through purchases spread over years. Ascorti left Castello at the end of 1968, drawing in his Cucciago neighbor and colleague Luigi Radice, born in 1939, as well.
The person who took on marketing the pair's pipes was Gianni Davoli, a tobacconist in Milan. When the samples Davoli sent to wholesalers in America were well received, the parties agreed on exclusive worldwide distribution.
The Mustache Pipe
The brand name is a diminutive of the Italian word camino, meaning hearth or chimney; according to the story, it came to mind during a conversation the three partners had by the fireside. Ascorti's and Radice's thick mustaches also became part of the identity: a mustache emblem was carved into the stem, the brand advertised itself with the phrase "La Pipa del Baffo," the mustache pipe, and the trio came to be known as "I tre Camini" (the three chimneys). The rustic Business finish applied to briar became the most sought-after surface finish; shapes were organized into a numbered mold system. A detailed breakdown of the lines and stamps is covered in a separate entry.
The Rise in America and the Partnership
Davoli's strategy was simple: present Caminetto as an option that could stand in for Castello, whose demand outstripped supply in those years, matching it in quality but far more accessible in price. The agreement with the Tinder Box chain secured nationwide distribution, and the brand quickly became one of America's best-selling pipes in its category. As demand strained the workshop's capacity, the team was expanded. Davoli, who took on the machinery investment, moved from distributor to partner, and from there to the company's controlling shareholder.
The Split and a Second Life
Production edging toward a factory arrangement strained Radice first; the numbered molds left no room for his own design pursuits, and the growing volume threatened quality. Ascorti shared the same concern, but management weight lay with Davoli. Complaints arriving from America in 1979 confirmed the worry; that December, Radice left the workshop and in 1980 began making pipes under his own name. Ascorti, together with the team he had trained, set up a new bench, turning out a limited number of pipes under the name Sergio for three months, before founding the brand carrying his own surname together with his son Roberto. The old Caminetto workshop left behind burned down shortly afterward.
Records indicate the brand name passed to Roberto Ascorti in the mid-1980s, and production resumed in Cucciago. Today the pipes come from the hands of Roberto and his son Tommaso, carrying an AR or AT stamp depending on the maker; the rustic Business finish remains the brand's signature surface. In scale, Caminetto sits closer to the artisan pipe tradition than to the large mass-production firms.
