Cannoy is the name of the briar pipe workshop run by American pipe maker Walt Cannoy in Florida. The workshop has produced entirely hand-shaped pipes since 1999; the maker's own "Suedeblast" surface finish and the Cardinal House line, introduced in 2015, are the brand's two best-known signatures.
Founding of the Workshop
Cannoy took an interest in pipe making in the second half of the 1990s while working as a research-and-development technician for a heavy machinery manufacturer in central Florida. He started with a ready-made kit he purchased — a block with the chamber and smoke channel pre-drilled. After working for himself and acquaintances for a few years, one of his pipes found a buyer at an online auction in 1999; the brand cites this date as its founding year. After attending the South Florida Briar Brotherhood gathering in 2000, his name became known in the community, and within a few years he moved to full-time production. Production was disrupted for a while in the mid-2000s; the maker returned to regular work in a separate workshop he set up in late 2005.
Stamp and Making Standards
Every finished pipe carries the wording "W CANNOY" on the shank face, a serial number, and a quality letter. Because the maker does not count more than one pipe as finished on a given day, the serial number also gives the completion date. The quality letters distinguish pipes by surface finish: C for smooth, A for carved, J for sandblast, M for mixed finish. Two conditions must be met before a stamp is struck — the smoke channel must enter exactly at the center of the chamber's base, and a pipe cleaner must be able to pass through the finished pipe without the stem being removed. In separate cases such as fully bent bowls, where the second condition cannot be met, this is noted specifically in that pipe's description.
The workshop handles one pipe at a time. Because no template or predetermined measurement is used and proportions are set by eye, even shapes carrying classic names are never identical to one another. The briar blocks used come from different regions; some are bought wholesale, some are individually selected at the cutting shop. Blocks are cured before working, and also undergo treatments aimed at reducing the tannin, acid, and resin remaining in the wood. Chambers are mostly conical, narrowing toward the base; a cylindrical chamber is preferred in shapes such as the billiard and pot. Stems are hand-cut from German vulcanite and Cumberland rod. Coloring is done with alcohol-based dyes, and the surface is finished only with pure carnauba wax.
Suedeblast and Cardinal House
Suedeblast is a surface finish the maker designed during a period around 2009 when he paused pipe making; pipes carrying this finish began to appear from 2013 onward. According to accounts, the mechanics of the process are nearly identical to sandblasting, while the equipment, abrasive, and method used are entirely different. The result is a surface where the grain stands out in high relief, resembling suede to the touch; on a small billiard, this stage alone can take up to eight hours. The same signature line also includes a group called "Works of Fiction" and a meerschaum collection.
Cardinal House is the second line, prepared in 2014 and introduced on September 30, 2015, at the New Orleans pipe show. These pipes are made from Italian briar, with stems hand-cut from German ebonite or acrylic. The line's name comes from Cardinal Place, the street in Lakeland where the workshop was long located; a one-man setup was maintained there in a shed in a home's backyard until mid-2019, and although the workshop later moved to another location, the name was kept. The Munn, Langford, Morton, and Hollingsworth sub-lines carry the names of Lakeland's parks and lakes. Cannoy's name also appears in the Go West piece on the American handmade pipe scene.
