Cassano Pipes is the brand name of the pipe production the Ceresa family sustained for a century in the town of Cassano Magnago, in Lombardy's province of Varese. It is a typical example of the years in which Italian briar pipe-making shifted from a handcraft to a machine-driven factory product: born as a small subcontractor filling someone else's orders, it reached, within two generations, a business selling under its own name to Europe and to America.

The Ceresa Family and the First Workshop

The family's entry into this business dates to the last decade of the 19th century; the year most often cited is 1897. Gerolamo Ceresa's first customer was the Rossi factory in Barasso, which passed on orders exceeding its own capacity to Ceresa. Production was initially split between two locations. Bowls were turned in Cassano Magnago, while bits were shaped and polished in a narrow workshop in Cavaria. Gerolamo's three sons — Pietro, Enrico, and Luigi — took over the business in turn as they reached adulthood; two of them were called up to the front in the First World War, but the workshop continued to operate.

This scattered arrangement was ended in 1919. The family bought a plot on Via Visconti in the town and had a single-roofed factory built, gathering everything under one roof. Since all the machinery ran on electricity, the business came to be known as "Gerolamo Ceresa – Fabbrica elettrica pipe," that is, the "electric pipe factory"; a description that sounds ordinary today meant a real technical edge for a provincial workshop in those years.

The Birth of the Cassano Brand

When the family decided to sell its own product, Enrico Ceresa took on the task on the family's behalf. In 1923 he travelled to Saint-Claude, the capital of French pipe-making, studying the production methods there in person for a few years. Following his 1926 return, the plant was reorganized from the ground up and the firm took the name Fabbrica Pipe Cassano. Contract production for Rossi was not abandoned; alongside it, Cassano-stamped pipes also reached the shelves. It is regarded as one of the early manufacturers that tried to break the perception, in a period when Italian-made pipes were seen as cheap mass goods, that this had to be the case.

Foreign Markets and the War Years

Expansion accelerated in the 1930s. Pietro Ceresa settled in Brazil in 1929, both organizing South American sales and building a supplier network for the horn widely used in bit-making; Brazilian horn was considered the most prestigious material of its kind in those years. Demand required a considerable enlargement of the factory in 1934. The United States led the list of buyers, followed by Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Germany, Hungary, and England.

The Second World War did not stop production but narrowed it. The real cut came after the war, due to the country's economic collapse: the factory stayed closed for roughly two years. The wheels began turning again around 1950, but pre-war production volume was never reached again.

The Last Generation

After 1970 the business was run by Enrico's son Carlo Ceresa; trade records list the firm as Fabbrica Pipe Sas di Carlo Ceresa & C. In the early 2000s only a few people worked in manufacturing, with orders exceeding capacity given out to small workshops in the area. The largest market was still the United States, where Cassano was known as a durable Italian mass-production pipe. The brand's most cited line is "Mare," whose deep sandblast texture is left in its natural colour. According to accounts, production came to an end sometime in the 2010s.
