The Czech Republic Pipe Brands Directory gathers, in alphabetical order, pipe brands founded in the country or run by Czech makers. Czech pipe-making has two branches: on one side the factory tradition rooted in the Proseč region, and on the other, one-person workshops. Most of the entries below belong to the second group; brands for which no detailed information exists have still been included by name.
Brands
-
Adam pipes — Carries the signature of Adam Schorcht, who works in Prague. The only quality recorded for the workshop is that its output is handmade; the founding year, shape preferences, and production volume are undocumented.
-
Biftek — The brand's name comes from the nickname maker Jiří Maczko (b. 1991) uses in the community. Maczko trained in art, then worked for seven years as a carpenter building wooden houses. His interest in pipe tobacco first led him to carve pipes as a hobby, and in 2017 he took it up full-time. He learned the craft without a master, and set out to try shapes outside the accepted patterns.
-
Demirev Pipes — Kolyo Demirev was born in Bulgaria, though his workshop is in Prague. Years spent working in electrics were what drew Demirev toward pipes, in search of a pursuit closer to nature and to handwork. His first attempts date to 2012; in the same period he shared a small workshop in Prague with a friend. He learned by working out, from photographs and videos, how a piece of briar turns into a pipe, and has continued his production by hand ever since.
-
Háp — Behind this workshop, founded in Proseč u Skutče, stands Pavel Háp (1954-2011). Háp worked for a quarter of a century at the BPK factory, which carries the region's pipe-making tradition, learning the craft there under Jan Buben. In 1999 he left the factory and turned part of his house into a workshop; his catalog came to include more than a hundred pipes, both classic shapes and his own designs, alongside numerous accessories. For material he favored Italian plateau briar. He died suddenly in his workshop on 5 March 2011.
-
Hodula — The Dýmky Hodula workshop in Opava is run by Pavel Hodula. The bulk of production consists of large-bodied freehand pipes. Hodula carves bodies from plateau-cut or top-grade briar blocks; he uses ebonite and acrylic for mouthpieces, and bores most of his pipes for a 9mm filter.
-
Kroupa — Hanz Kroupa, whose workshop is in Nový Jičín, is among the craftsmen who treat the pipe as a sculptural object (Dýmky Hanz Kroupa). Records indicate he is not confined to briar; he works other wood species, and even stone, into his pieces.
-
Kucera — The pipes of Prague-born Petr Kučera are known under the name Pipkin Pipes. Kučera took up pipe smoking at seventeen, but did not sit down at the bench until his mid-forties; he was guided there by Jan Gloucek and Tomáš Mahovský. In the workshop he opened in Voznice in 2003 he built up his own shapes and developed intricate rustication patterns; one of these is known as "honeycomb," while another draws on symbols from Aboriginal art. He uses Italian briar and applies smooth, sandblasted, and rusticated surfaces alike. For shanks and bands he turns to colored acrylic, horn, chestnut, and exotic woods such as gombeira and areca; for mouthpieces, ebonite and acrylic.
-
Machek — Jiří Machek, who runs a small operation in Radešínská Svratka, first encountered pipes at fifteen. He says he feels an affinity for the wood quality of Charatan and Dunhill classics, and for the shapes of Tom Spanu. For Machek, what defines a pipe is not the model drawn but the grain of the wood. The brand's emblem is a bent pipe whose shank curves into the letter M.
-
Pearl Bee — The brand is run by Radka Hofmannová, a woman pipe-maker living in Prague. At the time she was recorded, she had only recently entered the craft and was a member of an international pipe-makers' forum.
-
Swoboda — Named after Czech craftsman Wincenty Swoboda. Swoboda settled in Przemyśl, Poland, in 1908, where he founded one of the era's leading pipe factories. It is said that many of today's well-known Polish makers began their careers at this factory's benches. The business continued operating until 1945.
-
Zapletal ART — The brand of Jiří Zapletal. Records contain no information beyond the brand and maker's name.
