Charatan - Milan 2014 is a periodization attempt compiled in Milan in the summer of 2014 for enthusiasts trying to determine the production year of Charatan pipes. Because the brand never used a year code, dating has to rely on indirect clues; this study proposes a framework by matching those clues against changes in ownership.

Why a Period Scheme Was Needed

The customary shortcut in pipe dating is the year suffix found on Dunhill pipes. This suffix was originally meant to track a one-year guarantee, and over time it became the measure collectors trust most. Charatan never felt the same need, since it offered a lifetime guarantee on its pipes. Add to that the loss of most workshop records and the absence of any strict standard in stamping from the start, and what is left is only stamp styles, the number of lines in the shank stamping, and grade names. The Milan compilation proposes reading these three fragments together with changes in ownership.

Three Eras

The scheme first divides the brand's history into three broad eras. The first is the family era: it runs from the years founder Frederick Charatan opened the workshop up to 1962. The brand traditionally dates its founding to 1863; the compilation, by contrast, argues the workshop could not have opened that early, and that the early 1870s is more plausible, on the grounds that the founder would still have been a child at that date. Both dates are approximate and rest on reasoning rather than documentation. This era splits in two on its own when Frederick handed over to his son Reuben in 1910.

The second era begins when the business passed to its American distributor, Herman Lane. Lane is said to have been the brand's sole distributor in America from the mid-1950s onward, so 1962 is not treated as a sharp boundary. The real break within this era is the closing of the Ben Wade workshop in Leeds and the move of its machinery to London. Production expanded afterward, with part of the work handed to the Willmer and Danish Preben Holm workshops; inconsistencies in stamping increased accordingly.

The third era opens with Dunhill's takeover in 1976. Production continued as before in the first months; changes became apparent starting the following year. The closing of the London workshop and the move of production to Walthamstow, the sale of the brand to James B. Russell in 1988 with production shifting to France, and its return to Dunhill in 2002 mark the sub-periods of this era.

What the Stamps Say

The practical value of the compilation lies in the concrete markers tied to each period. The main criteria are whether the C sits inside the P in the "CP" logo on the mouthpiece, whether the "CHARATAN'S MAKE LONDON ENGLAND" shank stamping runs two lines or three, the "X" or "DC" letters following the shape code, and the letter "L" inside a circle seen on pipes bound for America. Grade names also point the way: Belvedere, Executive, Selected, and Supreme belong to the family era, while top grades like S100 or Coronation mark the Lane period.

The compilation itself notes that the information may be incomplete and subject to correction as new findings emerge. The scheme is therefore taken not as a fixed timeline but as a starting point for anyone holding a Charatan in hand.
