Chheda Pipes is the handmade pipe brand produced at Premal Chheda's bench in Columbus, Ohio, in the United States. The brand did not emerge from a standalone factory but from the back workshop of a tobacco shop: the Chheda family's Smokers' Haven. For this reason the Chheda name is known in the American pipe community both as a maker and alongside a well-established retail tradition.

From Shop to Workshop

According to the business's own records, Smokers' Haven's founding goes back to June 1940: the shop opened in downtown Columbus by Joseph Zieve, his wife Ina Zieve, and his brother-in-law Sid Ritter stayed in the same family's hands for more than forty years. Connections Zieve built in England during the Second World War brought Barling, Charatan, Dunhill, and GBD pipes, along with blends made specially for the shop, onto its shelves. The business was sold in 1983, then passed in 1987 into the hands of Arvind and Pushpa Chheda. Their son Premal Chheda took over in 1999; running the shop across from the Ohio State University campus, he turned the balance — which had shifted toward cigars in the 1990s — back toward pipes. The decisive step came in 2006: at the larger address the shop moved to, a workshop was set up equipped not just for repairs but for making pipes as well.

At Butera's Bench

Premal Chheda started working in the family's shops as a child and, by his university years, had handled nearly every task at the counter, including cleaning and repairing estate pipes being readied for sale. The idea of making his own pipe grew both out of this repair work and out of the high-quality artisan pipes he brought into the shop. In his first attempts he sought advice from Tim West and Steve Anderson, who supplied him materials and tools; but the name who set his direction was Mike Butera. Butera invited Chheda to his workshop in Texas and taught him the fundamentals of pipe-making. Having also trained names such as Steve Weiner, Larry Roush, and Michael Frey, Butera is regarded as a pioneer of the American high-grade pipe; this generation's portrait is drawn in the entry on Go West.

The Chheda and Buckeye Lines

Chheda made a limited number of pipes starting in 2003, but none of them carried his own name; the first Chheda-stamped pieces appeared around 2006-2007. The stamp reads "CHHEDA USA" and is accompanied by a three-digit serial number. Bodies are worked from select briar; for mouthpieces, quality materials are hand-cut, chief among them top-grade German ebonite. The repertoire ranges between classic shapes and freehand designs, and no two pieces are alike.

Between 2007 and 2016, the brand did not come from a single pair of hands. Bill Shalosky, who trained at the workshop, and later Jesse Jones, made some pipes alone and others together with Chheda through late 2014 and mid-2016 respectively; Shalosky moved to Tennessee's BriarWorks workshop at that later date. Chheda's wins at the Greater Kansas City Pipe Club's annual pipe-carving contest in 2013 and 2014 also fall within this period. After Jones's departure, the brand was again gathered under one pair of hands.

The Buckeye name was conceived in 2006 to make use of pieces that would not carry the Chheda stamp; over time it moved beyond a second-quality logic into a separate line that, while demanding less overall craftsmanship, still holds to the same standards for internal channel work. On this line the body is generally shaped by hand while the mouthpiece is typically adapted from a ready-made mold. In the mid-2020s the line was divided into tiers by degree of handwork, and, according to records, each tier began to be marked separately on the pipe.

The Workshop Circle

The Smokers' Haven workshop is known not just as a place that produces a brand but as a forge that trains makers; besides Shalosky and Jones, names such as Ryan Alden, Micah Cryder, and Reid Robertson worked there too. The workshop is also known as a gathering place for makers from different countries. In 2018 Premal Chheda also founded RawKrafted, a venture supplying briar blocks, mouthpieces, and tools for pipe-making.
