The China Pipe Brands Directory brings together, in alphabetical order, pipe brands and workshops founded in China. Briar pipe-making is a late-arriving tradition in the country: records indicate the first briar pipe makers became visible in 2007, and in the years since, both freehand workshops following the Danish line and manufacturers geared toward series production have been established. As a local feature, buckthorn (Rhamnus) wood, native to northern China, is used as a body material alternative to briar. The entries below simply summarize the facts on record.
Brands
-
Daadou Pipe — Works in Beijing's Haidian district. Production runs on two tracks: briar pipes, and pipes made from buckthorn (Rhamnus) wood, which has a deep history in northern China. Because buckthorn's hardness keeps it off the lathe, the brand's pipes on this line are shaped entirely by hand from start to finish; this same difficulty also explains why few makers have tried the material.
-
KingCheng — A manufacturer that has produced corncob and wood pipes since 2009, headquartered in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province. Because its product range is close to that of the American manufacturer, it is often referred to in the community as China's counterpart to Missouri Meerschaum.
-
Leizhou pipe tribes — The name of a collective bringing together five art-trained pipe makers. All five use the character "lei" (雷) as a shared brand mark; which piece belongs to whom is indicated by the maker's name struck beneath this mark.
-
Mister Pipe — Founded in 2008; its output is confined to handmade pipes. Bodies are made predominantly from northern China's buckthorn wood. By the brand's own account, its design line combines the Danish-derived freeform approach with elements specific to Chinese culture; it states it works with a young team and aims to bring recognition to Chinese handmade pipes.
-
Road Town — Its pipes come not from a single workshop but from various makers across China; distribution runs through Wilson Pipe Studio. Most of what is known about the brand rests on promotional copy in sales listings: according to this, the studio was founded in 2011, its founder Wilson is a pipe agent coming from an architecture background, and the roster includes more than twenty professional makers. The catalog splits into two series: "Classic," which follows traditional shapes and carries the "HS STUDIO / ROAD TOWN" stamp, and freeform "Freehand." Beyond this, no verified record exists.
-
Zhiputang — A craft workshop founded and run by Yang Zhimin. Besides producing pipes under his own name, the workshop also teaches the craft to new makers, functioning in part as a school. The best-known name to have come through it is Hangzhou-based Xin Li, who worked alongside Yang and signed numerous Zhiputang pipes.
-
Zhishan & Mindong Pipe — The joint brand of Zhishan and Mindong Wang, who work in Tianjin, near Beijing. Records identify this pair as the first two Chinese briar pipe makers to become known, in 2007. No detailed assessment of the pipes themselves exists in the archive.
