Clarin is a small clay pipe workshop working in Caxias do Sul, in southern Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state. The workshop's founder and maker is craftswoman and musician Edna Bertin. The brand's starting point is to push back against the habit of treating the clay pipe as a cheap, disposable object, and instead to treat the body — as with briar pipes — as a piece worth handling individually and keeping. Records indicate the first model was introduced in 2023; the copyright notice on the brand's official site gives the same year. Promotional texts present the pipes as "the first true Brazilian clay pipe"; this description is the brand's own claim and does not rest on an independent record.

Name and Founding Team

According to the story told, the brand's name comes from the clarion, an old wind instrument, and is a tribute to the grandfather who introduced Bertin to music in childhood; for now, this origin rests only on the brand's own promotional texts. Bertin worked in music for many years, first approached pipes as a collector, and moved into making them as her interest came to focus on clay bodies. Shaping and finishing are her own work. Some brand materials also credit Alexandre Vichinheski as a design partner; since this partnership does not appear on the workshop's official page or in encyclopedic records, it is not treated as confirmed.

Production

The body is entirely clay, shaped as a single piece; there is no separately attached mouthpiece. On some models a separate glaze is applied to the shank tip. This distinction, which gives the impression of a detachable mouthpiece, is purely visual — there is no actual joint.

The process is defined by two separate kiln runs. The dried body is first fired in a ceramic kiln, then glazed and fired a second time; finishing and polishing steps fall between these two runs depending on the model. The glaze is a glass-like layer that fuses with the ceramic during the second firing. Based on quartz or silica that melts at high temperature, it both polishes and protects the surface.

The clay's color changes three times over these runs: the unfired body is chocolate brown, after the first firing it turns salmon, and after the second firing it becomes sand-colored with small black flecks mixed in. Encyclopedic records indicate one of the clay types the workshop uses carries the name "Tabaco"; this name has not been confirmed by an independent source.

Models

The lineup is deliberately kept narrow and built on classic shapes.

  • The Bulldog One: Keeps the diamond-section shank of the Bulldog line. Its distinguishing feature is a double-walled chamber designed for heat insulation, along with an exterior surface that evokes stone texture.

  • The Canadian One: Follows the proportions of the Canadian family with its long, oval-section shank; an oval shank is rarely worked in ceramic. Besides the smooth finish, there are rustic, tobacco-colored, and glazed-shank variants. For these terms, see the entry on surface treatments.

  • The Cutty One: A plain interpretation of the cutty, one of the oldest clay pipe shapes. The forward-leaning chamber is kept, the heel preserved, and the dimensions and chamber volume enlarged.

Use and Care

The ceramic body differs from briar in terms of care expectations. A clay pipe requires no break-in period; nor is a thick layer of carbon buildup inside the chamber desired — cleaning the chamber after every use is expected instead. The body's gradual change in color, meanwhile, is regarded as the natural behavior of the ceramic.
