Colm Magner is a Canadian pipe maker born in 1961. He made his name with the kidney-sectioned "Boxer" form he developed himself. He came to the craft late and by a roundabout route: by the time he began carving pipes, he already had years of stage and screen work behind him.

From Stage to Bench

Magner spent many years acting, playwriting, and directing, working in television and film alongside theater. He is recorded as having taught acting and playwriting for a period at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). He began carving pipes in 1998, while working as an actor at the Shaw Festival; according to the account given, he never gave up the pursuit, and carried on carving alongside his stage work. He is also said to have made handmade jewelry during the same years. Though Canadian-born, he later settled in New York; the exact date of the move is unknown.

Production never scaled up to a factory level, remaining a one-person bench. In this respect Magner falls on the artisan side of the artisan-pipe-versus-factory-pipe distinction. In his early period he is reported to have supplied his pipes directly to tobacconists in Toronto, which kept total output limited and scattered.

The "Boxer" and Its Sense of Form

The maker's signature shape carries the name "Boxer." As the name suggests, it has a short, stocky body; in repair write-ups it is occasionally also called the "Boxing Glove." The body's cross-section resembles a kidney, and thanks to the broad flat underside, the pipe balances on its own wherever it is set down — a "chin sitter," in the community's phrase. This approach, which does not fit into a standard shape list, brings Magner's work close to the freehand tradition.

There is nothing unusual about his choice of material: the bodies are cut from briar. In the examples that can be examined, most of the surface is left smooth, with rustication (carving) applied only to a narrow area, and acrylic used for the mouthpiece; whether this is a general production habit or a solution particular to a single piece is unclear. The stamp under the body runs three lines: "Magner," "Handmade," "Canada."

How He Is Remembered

A Canadian trade magazine is said to have introduced Magner as "the country's rising young pipe maker"; the year and issue of that profile have not been confirmed. It is also noted in community sources that he smokes Virginia and Virginia-Perique blends. Since the well-documented information about him cuts off in the early 2010s, whether he is still producing today is unclear.
