Creative Briar Pipes is a Michigan-based, one-man American pipe workshop founded by Al Perkowski in 1972. Pipes bearing the brand name are hand-shaped one at a time; since there is no catalogue of ready-made models, no two examples are ever identical.

An Apprenticeship in Michigan

The story behind the workshop begins with a single pipe bought in 1970. Perkowski soon became taken with the idea of making his own pipes, and this interest led him to knock on the door of the Malaga Pipe Company in Royal Oak, Michigan. Founded around 1939 by George Khoubesser, this business was known for producing most of the pipes it sold on its own bench. The questions Perkowski put to Emmanuel "Manny" Khoubesser, the shop's second-generation owner, stretched over two years; during this time the many blocks of briar spent developed both his hand and his sense of shape. In 1972, once he found his output good enough to sell, he began selling first to acquaintances and then to nearby pipe shops.

Production Split Across Two Periods

The brand's first active period lasted about a decade. Perkowski's main living came from work as a wood model maker in the automotive industry; as his children grew and the job demanded more and more time, he set pipe production aside. The pause ended when the maker retired from that trade. According to records, the thirty-eight years spent as a model maker left their mark on the second period's formal language: attention to symmetry and unbroken, flowing lines are the two traits most emphasized in the brand's promotional material.

Approach to Making

Production rests entirely on a freehand approach; the grain direction and natural surface of the block determine the design. The body is shaped one piece at a time on an abrasive disc. The technical detail Perkowski emphasizes most is a drilling jig he designed himself. Because body geometry is not standardized in freehand pipes, the alignment of the bowl and smoke channel can easily drift; the purpose of this jig is to keep drilling on the intended axis for every piece.

The briar used is noted to be selected from plateau blocks sourced from Greece, Algeria, and Italy, and the mouthpieces are made from ebonite, vulcanite, and lucite. On some pipes, exotic woods, deer antler, and lucite are combined for the shank extension. According to the maker's statement, the bodies contain no fills — a fill meaning that small cracks or voids in the block are covered with putty, and its absence is specifically noted as a mark of flawless block selection in hand-shaped pipes. Owing to its small scale, the brand is counted as an example of the branch of American pipe making resting on individual craftsman workshops rather than corporate factories.
