D. Mostras Pipes is a contemporary handmade pipe brand working as a one-man workshop in Greece. By the maker's own account, his first pipe was shaped in the summer of 2011, in a house in a mountain village; this first attempt was a long-stemmed churchwarden. Since that date the brand has never turned to serial production, known instead for a workshop identity that puts out a limited number of pieces each year.

The Workshop's Way of Working

Mostras's technical grounding rests on training he received in using CNC machinery; he made some of the jigs in his workshop himself. Even so, production is not a process handed over to a machine: rather than following a single mold or model list, the maker says he reads the grain of the briar block in hand and determines the shape to suit it. By his own description, completing a single pipe passes through more than one hundred fifty separate stages. This approach is a typical example of the contemporary artisan pipe philosophy that treats grain direction as the design's starting point.

Materials

For body material, the workshop uses only Greek briar and olive wood; olive is one of the alternative woods valued alongside briar in the Mediterranean basin. Mouthpieces are hand-shaved from German ebonite, acrylic, and cumberland rod; among mouthpiece materials, this trio is a common choice among artisan workshops. As a rule the tenon is cut from the same rod as the mouthpiece; delrin or teflon tenons are used only where the design calls for it. For the finish, a naturally sourced oil blend said to be prepared to protect the wood is used; its composition is not disclosed.

Stamp and Numbering

Every pipe carries a stamp bearing the maker's name. The four-digit number accompanying the stamp conveys two pieces of information at once: the first two digits give the year of production, and the last two give that piece's sequence within the year. On this reading, the number "1501" means the first pipe of 2015. The stamp also includes letters indicating the surface finish:

Letter

Meaning

S

Smooth finish

R

Rusticated finish

SR

Half-rusticated finish

This arrangement is practical for collectors in tying dating directly to the stamp itself; it leaves no need for a separate date chart.

Series and Galleries

On the maker's official site, pieces are compiled into galleries sorted by production year starting from 2015. Outside the yearly ordering, there are also small series gathered around a shared design idea: Olibamboo, Nebula (with several editions), and the two-pipe wooden-boxed Gambler set are the chief examples. No published figure exists for the workshop's annual output; the one-man working arrangement speaks for itself as to how limited the number stays.
