Dantonian Pipe Works is a Danish workshop founded in 1970 by Sven Knudsen and his brother Teddy Knudsen. The venture, whose life was limited to a few years, is known today largely thanks to a single document: a sales catalogue printed only in English, dated 1971. This catalogue is one of the rare sources showing how a small workshop presented itself in the years when the Danish School was turning toward foreign markets.

The 1971 Catalogue

The catalogue went into distribution in the first months of 1971. That the text was prepared in a single language, English, was no coincidence; the brothers had targeted foreign markets from the start. Alongside Germany and the United States, records indicate that the real hope lay with Japan. Interest from Japanese buyers in Danish handmade pipes had grown markedly during this period, making it possible even for workshops of just a few people to export directly. Production was not made for stock but to order; the party placing the order was sometimes a single customer, sometimes a tobacconist's shop.

The shapes in the selection came from two sources. Some were newly designed for Dantonian; others were designs Sven had matured in previous years at Suhr's Pibemageri and later while working for W.Ø. Larsen and Pibe-Dan. In this second group, the forms known as "Walrus" and "Swan" stand out. A few of Teddy's own designs also made it into the selection.

The Brothers' Partnership

The workshop's starting point was Teddy leaving his job at Anne Julie's in 1970. As the account goes, the reason for the departure was that he was not seeing pay commensurate with his work making top-grade pipes; this reasoning rests on a single source. His older brother Sven called him to his own place of work, and the resulting partnership took the name "Dantonian PipeWorks."

The workshop was located in Tappernøje, south of Copenhagen. Although some sources place it on the island of Funen, geographic records show that Tappernøje lies on the island of Sjælland (Zealand), within the boundaries of Næstved Municipality; the nearby town of Præstø is in the same region.

Stamp and Dissolution

The pipes were stamped "Dantonian — Handicraft of Copenhagen." On old estate examples still circulating today, the stamps "Genuine Briar" and "S. Knudsen" are also reported alongside this wording; some pipes carry wording such as "Full Straight," describing the grain pattern of the briar.

The products drew interest, but the partnership did not prove equally lasting. According to the single source that reports it, Teddy left after roughly two and a half years, in early 1973, to go his own way. Sven Knudsen continued production under the Dantonian name for a few more years. This short-lived partnership is regarded as groundwork for both makers' later periods of independent production.
