D'Capo is the brand of handmade pipes Argentine maker Pablo Minotti carves one at a time at his bench in Buenos Aires. The name recalls the musical term "da capo," marking a return to the start of a passage; the family behind the brand does in fact come from musical-instrument and furniture craftsmanship. As production has never been large in scale, D'Capo-stamped pipes are considered uncommon pieces today.

Family Background

The Minotti family comes from the town of Cabiate, in the Como region of northern Italy. Records indicate the family has been known since the late 19th century for ebony furniture-making and lutherie (stringed-instrument making). The town lies within the woodworking basin of the region that gave rise to the Como school of Italian pipemaking; Minotti's later turn to pipes is thus not entirely disconnected from the family trade. The brand's own promotion has emphasized this dual belonging, describing its products as Italian-crafted pipes carved in Argentina.

From Bench to Market

Minotti is said to have carved his first pipes in 1994, in the period he took up pipe smoking, for himself. After keeping this up as a pursuit for a long time, he decided in 2003, at the urging of those around him, to sell what he made. That same year he presented his work at a slow-smoking competition held in Barcelona, and the reception there marked the start of the brand's move abroad. In the years that followed, D'Capo pipes reached, besides Argentina, Spain, Italy, Poland, Sweden, the United States, Colombia and Uruguay.

Minotti has also prepared special series for clubs: chief among these are the fifth-anniversary pipe for the Pipa Club Buenos Aires, founded in November 2000, and special pieces made for the pipe community in Mexico.

Approach to Making

D'Capo pipes are made from briar blocks, carved one at a time by hand rather than within a mold-based series-production system; the phrase the brand uses to describe itself is "hand-carved." There is no reliable record of where the briar used was sourced. Working this way, D'Capo represents the one-man workshop tradition against factory-scale operations in Argentina such as Luigi Pipes.

Argentina never built a briar-pipemaking tradition on a European scale, and production has remained largely limited to a handful of workshops and individual makers. D'Capo is remembered within this narrow circle as one of the few names that has managed to reach beyond it; the brand's name is generally mentioned in this context in writing on Argentine pipemaking.

Records indicate Minotti stopped making pipes in the early 2010s; since this date rests on secondary-market listings, it is not certain. The address dcapo.com.ar used for the brand has also been offline for a long time.
