Del Grano is a small-scale brand founded in the northern Italian city of Parma that treats pipes and smoking accessories together with jewelry-making craftsmanship. Behind the brand stands Alberto Del Grano, trained as an engineer. The firm is not a mass-production pipe factory; alongside numbered, limited-quantity pipes it also makes cigar cases, shellac-varnished tobacco boxes, humidors, ashtrays and cigar-gauge tools. No independent record of the founding year has been found; the brand name becomes visible in publications from the early 2000s onward.
Working Method
Del Grano's work is not the product of a single bench. The craft each piece requires is farmed out to separate specialists, whom the founder gathers around his own design. As a result, techniques kept alive today in only a handful of workshops — shellac polishing, marble carving, precious-metal casting — sit side by side in the same catalogue; carved marble and metal casting are combined together in the ashtrays.
The briar blocks used in the pipes are selected from Tuscany. Finished bodies carry yellow or white gold bands, and on some models diamonds set in a gold mount; a model with a black-lacquered body inlaid with white gold and diamonds is a frequently cited example of this approach. The same material scheme extends to accessories beyond pipes as well: cigar cases, ranging from single-cigar tubes to box-shaped holders, are also made of briar and encircled with a gold band.
The Verdi Pipe
The brand's most cited work is the pipe prepared in memory of the composer Giuseppe Verdi. Verdi died on January 27, 1901; his birthplace, the village of Roncole, also lies within the boundaries of Busseto, in the province of Parma. Both date and geography thus form a direct link for a Parma workshop. Introduced in 2001, the hundredth anniversary of his death, the pipe was announced as a numbered series of 999. The composer's portrait was worked in relief, yellow gold applied over white gold; the pipe was presented with a wooden case fastened with leather straps. How many pieces of the series were actually completed cannot be traced through independent records.
Position and Fate
The known centers of gravity in Italian pipemaking cluster around the Pesaro and Como schools; Parma is not counted among these centers. Del Grano, too, is considered a separate branch closer to jewelry and luxury-goods craftsmanship than to these main currents. The criterion emphasized in the firm's own promotional text is not the classic pipe grading based on grain pattern, but ornamentation and finishing craftsmanship.
The same texts also give a family tree: the Parma painter Giorgio Gandini del Grano, who died in 1538, and the painter Riccardo Fainardi, who likewise worked around Parma, are cited as evidence of an artistic streak running in the family. That both painters actually lived can be confirmed by independent sources; the claim of kinship, however, rests solely on the firm's own statement. No independent record documenting the brand's regular production beyond the mid-2000s has been found either; the firm's former domain name today redirects to a page unrelated to the brand.
