Don Florian is the brand of a small workshop run alone by Matteo Stefani in Italy. Having no connection whatsoever to series production, the signature is known for two choices: using only the outermost layer of old plateau briar blocks, and never resorting to a rotary tool in shaping.
Working with File and Sandpaper
The workshop's material list is short. Stefani states he uses no wood other than top-grade plateau briar of Calabrian and Corsican origin, seasoned for at least five years. Only the outer part of the block is worked; this is where the wood's oldest and hardest texture lies. In freehand and large-bodied examples, part of the plateau surface is left raw, so that where the material comes from remains visible to anyone looking at the pipe.
No lathe or similar rotary tool is involved in shaping. The rough form is reached with a file, then the surface is finished with progressively finer sandpaper — roughly from grit 80 to grit 800. This is a way of proceeding incomparably slower than doing the same work by machine, and one that inherently limits production volume. Only carnauba polish is used in finishing; no paint, colorant, or other coating is applied. In the resulting bare surfaces, the grain pattern is not obscured by any intervention, and this exposure largely defines the brand's look. The shapes most often encountered in retailer catalogues are wide-fan-bodied freehands and free forms.
From Law to Carving
Information about Stefani's life story rests largely on his own account; there is no way to compare it against an independent record. By his telling, he was born near Venice in 1971 and first encountered pipes in 1992, as a student preparing for law exams. He stayed away from pipes for the years that followed; in 2002 he began practicing law, and two years later turned to collecting the work of leading makers. His own listed collection included names such as Dunhill, S. Bang, Bo Nordh, Castello, and Ser Jacopo.
His own attempts to carve pipes by hand began in 2005. Stefani says he went through a fair number of blocks before he was satisfied with what came from his hands. His starting to work regularly, first for himself and then for those close to him, dates to around 2008; the brand's identity also settled after this date. The years 1992 and 2008 are repeated across various retailer listings as well, though their common source remains the maker's own account.
Source of the Name
The brand name comes from a place name. In the garden of Stefani's old country house stands a small chapel said to hold relics belonging to the Roman soldier Saint Florian; the maker states he carves his pipes in the workshop right next to this chapel. The city the workshop belongs to is given differently across various sources, and so is not specified here.
