Dr. Grabow model names divide the brand's roughly century-long production history into two distinct logics: lines identified first by number, then by name. Born within Chicago's M. Linkman & Co., the brand entirely rebuilt its catalogue after moving production to the town of Sparta in North Carolina, replacing its old series numbers with memorable model names. For this reason, collectors identifying a Dr. Grabow must first determine which period it belongs to. For the brand's general history, see the entry on Dr. Grabow.

The Numbered Series Period

The earliest examples carry no model name; the shank bears only a two-digit shape number and the manufacturer's stamp. As the catalogue expanded in the second half of the 1930s, each line acquired its own starting number. According to records, Ventilator is numbered 63-65, Select Grain 84, Supreme 94-95, and Tru-Grain 60 and 62; for De Luxe the numbers 92, 97, and 98 appear. These numbers most often distinguish not the shape but the finish and color option applied: the natural, dark, and walnut-toned counterparts of the same line were given consecutive numbers. Names such as Ringmaster and Sunset Grain, dated to the 1950s, fall at the tail end of this transition period. Some names sold under the same roof, such as Courtleigh, Hollycourt, and Fifty Grand, are technically separate lines and do not carry the Dr. Grabow stamp.

Names of the Sparta Years

The Sparta-era catalogue is built on names. The introduction of Regal, Savoy, Riviera, Starfire, and Viscount in quick succession around 1956-57 marks the most intense moment of this transition; the upper tier is completed with Eldorado's appearance in the catalogue in the very early 1960s. The Duke family, dated to around 1964, branches internally into the sub-names Golden, Silver, Crown, Grand, and Royal. In a span running from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s, the Westbrook, Belvedere, Berwyck, Commodore, and Sculptura lines were released through R.J. Reynolds's coupon-redemption distribution program; this program is discussed separately in the entry on RJR coupon pipes.

The difference between lines cannot be reduced to name alone. Each line was assigned a particular briar grade, and economy lines such as Hillcrest and Bucko, which made use of flawed blocks, were added later. For details, see the entry on briar used in Dr. Grabow pipes. In examples of Sculptura and Commodore dated to the late 1960s, coarse-pattern sandblasting is seen; the brand's approach to this technique follows the general trend described under surface finishes.

The Later Stage of Naming

After the 1970s, the catalogue drew back into a narrower field. Names such as Omega, CDL, and Viking Pacer remained limited experiments; lined models with a meerschaum lining used lining pieces imported from Italy, while Freehand was developed in emulation of the era's imported free-form pipes. According to records, the name Royalton returned in 1988 as a revival of an old line name; after the ownership change of the early 1990s, new names such as Cardinal, Redwood, and Big Pipe appeared in the catalogue. A portion of these late-period names remained more on packaging than forming a separate line; the pipes themselves mostly carried only the brand stamp.
