Dunhill is a business shaped, despite being known by its founder's name, not by a single person but by three successive generations. The brand's technical story on the pipe side is covered in the entry on Dunhill (White Spot); what concerns us here is the family and corporate decision-making that steered that story.
Alfred Dunhill
The founder was born on 30 September 1872 in a neighborhood in Hornsey, north London; he was among the children of Henry Dunhill (1842-1901) and Jane Styles (1843-1922). The apprenticeship he entered at sixteen was, in most sources, described as harness-making, the family trade; other descriptions of his father's profession also appear in sources. In 1893, at twenty-one, he took over the business and turned the workshop from horse-carriage equipment toward motor-vehicle accessories. The best-known product of this period is the pipe he filed a patent for in 1904, designed with a windshield so it could be smoked in an open automobile against the wind. To bring the legal side of his inventions under a separate roof, he founded a patent company in 1905; this company was not long-lived and was set aside at the end of 1906 as the tobacco business grew. The tobacconist's shop on Duke Street opened the following year.
The product of the truly productive years leading up to his retirement is two books. The Pipe Book, devoted to pipe history, came out in 1924; the same year saw the fifth edition of his earlier compilation, About Smoke. The interest the book aroused resulted in Royal Society of Arts membership the following year. His departure from management came in 1928, at fifty-six, for health reasons; he spent his remaining years on the Sussex coast and died in Worthing on 2 January 1959, at eighty-six.
Alfred Henry and Herbert Behind the Scenes
Born in 1896, Alfred Henry was the founder's eldest son and, like his father, began work as an apprentice in 1912, at sixteen. His apprenticeship was interrupted by the First World War: he went to war as a private, received the Military Cross in 1918 for his conduct in the assault at Frégicourt, and returned from the front with the rank of captain. Returning to his post at the company in 1919, Alfred Henry took over the chairmanship when his father stepped down in 1928, and held this seat for thirty-three years.
How much authority the chairmanship carried, however, is debated. According to his sister Mary's memoirs, the reins of day-to-day decisions lay with their uncle Herbert Dunhill, who lived abroad: turnover figures were reported to him by telegram, and every matter requiring a signature was submitted for his approval through a stream of mail and courier traffic. This family account has no third-party confirmation. Whatever the arrangement was until Herbert's death in 1950, the company reached an international scale during those same years. Part of the legacy Alfred Henry left is also his pen: The Gentle Art of Smoking (1954) is his book, and he also wrote the foreword to the revised edition of The Pipe Book.
Mary Dunhill and After
The founder's daughter, Mary Dunhill, born in 1906, joined the board in 1943, took over general management after Herbert's death, and became chairman in 1961. The Queen's Award to Industry given in 1966 and 1969 for export success falls within her tenure. Our Family Business, which she published in 1979, is the most-cited first-hand source on the brand's internal workings; it is also the sole witness for most of the family details in this entry. The family's ties to the company weakened in the following decades; one of the final links in this process is the Richard Dunhill generation.
