Emiliano is the brand of handmade pipes produced under his own name by Brazilian master Emanuel de Queiroz Emiliano. Production takes place in a one-man workshop based in Curitiba, in the south of the country; there is no series production, and every pipe comes from start to finish out of the same hands. The brand is counted among the relatively young but fast-maturing links of the Brazilian workshop tradition that gathered strength after the 2000s.

From Photography to the Lathe

Emiliano was born in Fortaleza; he moved south to Curitiba at a young age and worked for many years as a professional photographer. It is said that the sensitivity to form, texture, and proportion he brings to the bench comes from this earlier profession. His acquaintance with the pipe goes back further still, to years spent at a seminary; for a long time he remained only a smoker.

The turning point, according to the record, came in the summer of 2020. During the months of pandemic lockdown, with nothing on hand but a sanding machine and a drill, he made his first pipe: a Brazilian walnut bowl with a cast-resin mouthpiece. When the photo was shared online, the flood of order requests turned it from an idle experiment into something more. In the period that followed, tools were acquired step by step and the Curitiba workshop took its present shape.

Line of Mastery and Influences

His turn toward pipemaking owes much to the work of two Brazilian masters, Gustavo Cunha and Flávia Rodrigues, the pair behind the marTelo brand; he is said to have learned the basic principles of the craft initially from online tutorials. The real leap, however, came through the friendship he formed with fellow countryman Luiz Lavos. It is known that he received direct guidance from Lavos on design logic, surface finishing, and brand identity.

He continued his training in Italy, watching in person the workshops of Angelo Fassi in Milan and of Angelo del Prete, maker of Il Cerchio pipes, in Pordenone. In terms of design language, the Danish school is considered decisive; clean lines and a commitment to classic proportions are the visible result of that influence. He is recorded as closely following the work of contemporary masters such as Tom Eltang, Former, Chris Asteriou, and Wandi Riyadi.

Production and Shape Repertoire

Emiliano pipes are carved from Italian briar blocks; mouthpieces are hand-cut from ebonite (vulcanite). Examples using natural materials such as horn or bamboo for the band and spacer are on record. Surface finishing is applied both smooth-polished and sandblasted.

The repertoire includes classic shapes such as the billiard and dublin alongside more demanding forms such as calabash, blowfish, and ramses. These complex designs are said to serve as a testing ground where the master seeks his own line and pushes his technical limits; in this respect, the brand follows a production that moves back and forth between classic shapes and a freehand approach.
