Fikri Baki is a meerschaum pipe master who worked in Eskişehir. His full name is recorded in foreign sources as Fikri Baki Cetekinkaya; because of the short signature placed on the mouthpiece, however, his pipes are mostly known in the community as "F. Baki." Baki, who entered the craft as an apprentice in 1969, gradually moved away from the figurative carving of his early years toward classic pipe forms and a contemporary Scandinavian line. His main reputation comes from adapting techniques and materials specific to briar pipemaking to meerschaum.
From a Basket-Weaving Village to the Bench
Sources state that Baki came from Sepetçi, a village associated with Eskişehir's meerschaum quarries. The village's name was later changed to Beyazaltın, based on the description of the stone as "white gold." In settlements where the raw material is dug straight from the ground, it is customary for children to sit at the bench at an early age. According to the record, Baki began his apprenticeship in 1969 and trained through the 1970s under the master carvers of the day. Eskişehir carving's repertoire in those years was heavily figurative: the bowl was turned into a face, a scene, or an animal's head, and mastery was measured by the depth of the relief.
From Figure to a Contemporary Line
Baki began the trade within this tradition, but in his mature-period work he abandoned figure entirely. Sources tie this shift to the contact he formed with European pipemakers; according to the account, he spent a period working alongside German maker Rainer Barbi, observing pipemaking firsthand. Since only a few sources give this information, its details remain uncertain.
His later designs move back and forth between established pipe molds and freeform exploration. He is considered to lean close to a contemporary Danish aesthetic in his proportions and surface flow. Forms seen in the record include bent billiards, apples, panels, horns, volcanoes, rhodesians, bent eggs, and whales, along with a reverse-calabash arrangement in which smoke passes through an additional chamber beneath the bowl.
Carrying Briar Techniques into Meerschaum
The aspect of Baki most cited in the community is his carrying over of practices established in briar pipemaking into meerschaum. Silver bands and fittings, bamboo spacer pieces between body and mouthpiece, and hand-cut and hand-shaped ebonite or Cumberland (mottled ebonite) mouthpieces stand foremost among these. Sources state that he was the first master in Eskişehir to use bamboo on a pipe. Mouthpieces are not bought ready-made but worked individually for each pipe; this detail is considered a clear departure from the mass-assembly habit common in the region.
Signature, Distribution, and Current Status
Baki's marking is not a stamped die but a cursive signature placed on the side of the mouthpiece. On older pieces the signature appears abbreviated as "F. Baki," while newer work carries the name written out in full. For many years production reached the market solely through a single distributor, Deniz Ural; around 2019 distribution is recorded as having passed to a different, foreign-based dealer. According to the record, the master has put down his bench in recent years. Pipes carrying his signature continue to attract collector interest as documents of the passage from Eskişehir's figurative carving tradition to contemporary pipe design.
