Gasparini is a small-scale pipe workshop producing in the village of Luvinate, in the province of Varese, northern Italy. The brand is considered a typical example of the intermediate generation in Italian pipe making formed not by large factories but by family businesses: a limited number of enduring models, naturally aged logs, and a production system built on handwork. Its founding date is disputed; the Pipedia entry states that Mario Gasparini and his wife Ida began the business in 1938, while the manufacturer's own promotional material, and secondary sources relying on it, give 1948. Because the war years fall between the two dates, it remains unclear which marks the actual start of production.

Material and Production System

The workshop's main material is Italian briar, supplemented by a small amount of log of Greek origin. The principle Gasparini's own account emphasizes is drying the log naturally rather than with heat or other accelerating methods. In practice this means the blocks are left in storage for months, stretching to years for the top-quality groups; the workshop holds the view that fast drying damages the wood's fiber structure. Once dried, the blocks are carved according to the direction of the grain when shaping begins.

Production is split into two separate lines. On one side is the series line, where bowl, shank, and drilling operations are carried out partly by machine and the pipes are then sorted into groups by quality and surface finish. On the other are the "Fatta a Mano" (handmade) and "da Collezione" (collection) groups, shaped entirely by hand from selected logs; one-off pieces prepared for collectors also come from this branch. The practice that sets the workshop apart from its peers is fitting a bowl carved from solid meerschaum block into a finished briar body.

The Workshop's Course

The building housing the production section was expanded in the early 1950s, and the workshop has operated in the same structure ever since. The office and warehouse, kept in Milan for a long time for marketing reasons, were moved to Luvinate in 1971, bringing the whole business together at a single address. The information that management passed from 1977 to the founder's daughter Marisa Gasparini and her husband, and later to their daughter, rests solely on the manufacturer's own promotional material and has not been confirmed by an independent record.

Series

The main lines that made the brand's name are as follows:

Series

Year

Notable Feature

M.G.M.

1965

Classic lines, the workshop's longest-running line

Presidente

1977

Reportedly prepared for a meeting with Sandro Pertini in Rome

Cobra

1979

Curved body and an unusual airway arrangement

Gasparini Special

Early 1980s

Another group made up of classic shapes

Diamond

Early 1990s

Large silver-banded pieces; smooth or sandblasted finish

The account concerning the Presidente series should be treated with caution: the information appears in only a single source, and since Pertini's presidency began in 1978, the date 1977 does not sit consistently with the title "president."

Gasparini pipes seen on the secondary market cluster mostly around classic pipe shapes. In examples shared in restoration writings, the stamps show the brand name alongside a series name and shape number; because no published document exists on how the stamping changed over the years, this arrangement is not considered a reliable dating criterion. Though the brand remains in the shadow of large-scale Italian manufacturers such as Savinelli, it is regarded as a well-known name at its own scale.
